As you can see from the photos on this page (and continued on page 2) the MSUS
Science Department has benefited greatly from the move to the new premises. We
now have 3 specialist labs and a dedicated Science room which allow our pupils to
have much more direct hands on access to Science than was previously possible.
In Middle and Upper Schoo,l Science is taught by subject specialists with general
Science being offered to years 7, 8 and 9, and the individual subjects being taught
from IGCSE though to A-level and IB.
World Maths Day
Within the first hour of this eagerly anticipated event we had three pupils appearing in
the top 100 throughout the world and as the day progressed they were joined by even
more pupils from our school. By the end of the day, unfortunately, St. George’s Duisburg
had fallen off of the Top 100 worldwide although only by a very small margin, less
than 400 points…
Through our sponsorship, you were able to raise an impressive 800€ which is a valuable
contribution towards continuing our use of the Mathletics resource. Thank you to
all of the children and parents who have helped in making this possible.
Easter Bells in France
Year 5 classes have been learning about Easter
celebrations and traditions in France and have also
enjoyed making beautiful Easter decorations.
In France, even though Easter bunnies are found
everywhere in local stores and “ pâtisserieschocolateries,“
it is traditionally believed that it was
not them who brought Easter eggs to children.
The eggs are brought by the Easter bells “ cloches de
Pâques“ on their way back from Rom. Since the 7th
century the Catholic church have forbidden the
ringing of the bells in homage to the death of Christ
between Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday. In
France legend has it that on Maundy Thursday the
bells´chimes flee to Rom where the Pope blesses
them. There they collect the Easter eggs which will be
scattered in the gardens on their return journey. By
the morning of Easter Sunday, they have returned and
are ringing joyfully to celebrate the resurrection of
Christ. When children hear them, they go to the
gardens on egg hunt.
The Easter Bells are often represented with a pair of
wing, ribbons and sometimes are transported in carts.
Year 5 classes and Mme Duplâtre wish Bonnes Fêtes
de Pâques à tous!

Friedensdorf Foundation
Following the great success of our Christmas time Charity Box Appeal, Year 5
went on our first class visit to the Friedensdorf Foundation in Oberhausen. As the
day begun, the children were helping to sort and pack the coach with the fantastic
donations received. We would like to thank all the parents who donated a
huge number of wonderful items.
The rest of the day was a great success with fantastic sport and craft activities
enjoyed by all. There were many parents who also attended this trip and the
Year 5 teachers and children would like to say a special thank you to all of them.
