Lecture series honors distinguished community leader Tennessee Wesleyan College hosted its Inaugural Dr. Morris D. Goodfriend Distinguished Lecture on Tuesday, March 18, honoring Dr. Goodfriend as a beloved friend of the college. To be held annually, the lecture series will feature guest speakers discussing business topics and issues with audiences of TWC business students, faculty, alumni, and other guests. “We were honored to celebrate Dr. Mike Goodfriend’s legacy as an entrepreneur and community leader with this inaugural distinguished lecture,” said Dr. Harley Knowles, TWC president. “Several of the attendees had worked for Dr. Goodfriend in his store in Athens and credit him for their career success.” The inaugural guest speaker for the lecture series was Dr. C. Warren Neel, a former Dean of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Business School for 25 years who also served in government as the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration, managing a budget of over $20 billion while serving as the Governor’s chief financial officer. Dr. Neel shared his views on ethics and morality in business, sharing experiences from his career in education and government as well as his work serving on corporate boards. Before Dr. Neel’s lecture, Dr. Goodfriend’s son, Robert Goodfriend, spoke about his father’s legacy and successful career growing Goody’s Family Clothing store to 383 stores throughout the South and Midwest. “My father was special and he is sincerely missed,” said Goodfriend. “I truly appreciate Tennessee Wesleyan College honoring him in this way.” Robert Goodfriend To show the families’ gratitude, Goodfriend presented a donation of $100,000 from The Goodfriend Foundation to Dr. Knowles to support the lecture series and the school’s business department. “I was thrilled to receive such an unexpected generous donation,” said Dr. Knowles. “Robert and and his wife Wendy Goodfriend are wonderful philanthropists and we were honored to accept their support to further enhance our business program and continue the Dr. Morris D. Online Master of Business Administration plans to launch this fall Tennessee Wesleyan College is accepting applications for its new online Master of Business Administration program, tentatively scheduled to begin fall 2014. The program is designed to accommodate both full-time and part-time students in a 10-course format, providing students with the opportunity to achieve a graduate degree in as few as 12 months. The flexible, online format will allow working adults to earn the degree without interrupting personal and professional obligations. “Tennessee Wesleyan College’s MBA degree is designed to prepare working professionals with the knowledge and skills to succeed in a competitive business world,” said Dr. Martha Maddox, associate dean for business administration and chair of the department of business administration. “Providing the MBA degree in an online format will assist the college in fulfilling its mission to provide students the highest quality educational experience, promote personal integrity, responsibility, and purpose, and to prepare students for a life of leadership and service in an ever-changing global society.” TWC’s online MBA program emphasizes ethical decision-making, critical analysis and problem-solving, strategic orientation, global perspectives, concern for sustainability and growth, and respect for people and communities – skills necessary for today’s business leaders.
