Pottawatomie Beyond… A publication provided for the community by St. Charles Park District Fall 2014 Giving Mother Nature a Hand Like busy parents everywhere, sometimes Mother Nature needs a helping hand before things just get out of control. It’s hard work keeping the planet in shape, making sure everything is properly balanced and growing when and where it’s supposed to. At some of her best local venues, Mother Nature’s helping hands are supplied by the St. Charles Park District staff and supplemented by a team of dedicated volunteers who willingly and lovingly give of their time to make sure local diverse natural areas stay environmentally healthy. “We absolutely could not do this without them,” said Greg Pipis, Ecological Restoration Technician. “We have four full-time staff to manage 500 acres. That’s a lot of ground to cover.” Most of that acreage is split between four distinct natural areas, each one assigned a regular restoration day where volunteers work side-byside with park district naturalists to perform a variety of maintenance tasks that change from season to season -- from pulling invasive plants such as buckthorn, honeysuckle and garlic mustard in the spring and summer, to clearing dead trees and doing prescribed burns in the fall and winter. These “Give Nature a Hand” days take place every Saturday morning from 9am to noon. “Each park is a little bit different,” said Pipis. Norris Woods is a high quality, mature woodland, while Persimmon Woods is a unique upland swamp. Ferson Creek Fen is a premiere wetland, while Hickory Knolls has a bit of everything – woodland, wetland and prairies. Three of the most dedicated volunteers are Mitch Adamus, a 20-year veteran volunteer who started coming out to Hickory Knolls back when the area was originally known as Campton Hills Park; Julie Long, who started volunteering at Ferson Creek Fen in the days when her now-grown children were doing nature projects for middle school; and Rosemary Maziarz, an East Coast transplant who has been volunteering at Norris Woods since moving to the area in 1998. Their long-term association with these and other parks has earned them the status of stewards which is quite an honor, according to Pam Otto, Manager of Nature Programs and Interpretive Services. “Our stewards have a voice in what happens in the parks,” said Otto. “There is a lot of responsibility that goes along with being a steward.” Stewards act as another set of eyes and ears for the park district naturalist staff. They know these parks on an intimate basis, and often alert staff members to areas in need of attention and provide direction on how those restoration efforts should be carried out. Caretakers, observers, passionate advocates for both the environment and volunteerism, they devote their free time to help treasured natural areas develop and maintain good ecological health. For Mitch Adamus, spending time outdoors is “something that runs in my family.” Both sets of grandparents were farmers, and great-grandparents on both sides of the family immigrated to America to work the land. “It must be in my DNA,” he said. “I guess it’s genetic.” What appeals most to Adamus about volunteering is the opportunity it provides to help make the world a better place. “I look around and see what’s going on with the planet and know that this restoration work makes a difference,” he said. Adamus receives gratification from the instantly recognizable improvements that result from restoration work, such as the return of wildlife and migrating birds to an area in Hickory Knolls known as Dana’s Overlook. “We cleared a thicket of buckthorn that was smothering old oak trees,” said Adamus. “The next year, we had flycatchers come back to that area. It was a profound and immediate change.” Like Adamus, Julie Long grew up in a family where volunteering was encouraged to the point where now it is “just who she is.” Her father conducted bird identification walks, while her grandmother was a naturalist who wrote articles about what she observed. Otto calls Long an “ultra volunteer,” citing her additional volunteer work as a monitor for birds, frogs and butterflies in the park district’s natural areas. “She has an avid interest in the outdoors,” says Otto. continued on p. 6 St. Charles Park District • 101 S.
