Let's keep in mind that sometimes IQ is meaningless to measure a person's ability to
make sound decisions--even absent mental illness. We see a common pattern in people
with damage from prenatal alcohol exposure, for example, where the IQ is much higher
than adaptive behavior and functional age. Even with IQs over 80, 90, even 100, the
ability to connect the dots is gravely impaired. Thank goodness the new DSM opens this
definition to adaptive behavior!

The discrepancy between I.Q. and Adaptive Quotient was shown 18 years ago-
Ann P Streissguth, Helen M Barr, Julia Kogan, Fred L Bookstein. Understanding the
Occurrence of Secondary Disabilities in Clients with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome [FAS] and
Fetal Alcohol Effects [FAE]. Final Report. University of Washington School of Medicine
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences 1996 -
- the neurological basis of deficient adaptive and executive function, with stuck- in - set
perseveration lies in the Hippocampus - Prefrontal Cortex - Amygdala - Corpus
Callosum Connectome. These are all areas of the brain known to be affected by
Prenatal Alcohol Exposure, and in DSM diagnoses.
It is time Psychiatry made the connections.

Looking at this though the lens of "common sense" which we know doesn't apply in the
court of law - or the DSM.... human instinct and adaptation are meaningful (in my
opinion) to the basic principle of understanding the difference between right or wrong
when it comes to what one believes their disability to be... It's about mind over matter
