Last month I explored poor customer service and how it can impact on your<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess’s profits, particularly <strong>in</strong> hospitality (See Q Magaz<strong>in</strong>e issue March 2012).<br />

Evan, I did have a chuckle read<strong>in</strong>g the 'borderville antics' of your recent encounter with<br />

a cafe staffer <strong>in</strong> what sounds like a very amateur food & beverage operation. 'Cool' can<br />

be an 'edge' for a bus<strong>in</strong>ess but it can also be very close to the edge of a slippery slope<br />

to f<strong>in</strong>ancial failure. Such an unprofessional culture can easily reach a tipp<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t where<br />

operat<strong>in</strong>g costs escalate and customers or <strong>in</strong>come, evaporate.<br />

So what if you don't tra<strong>in</strong> them and they do stay? Slow service = low productivity =<br />

reduced sales per hour = higher operat<strong>in</strong>g costs = missed sales opportunities = wrong<br />

orders = waste & low customer satisfaction = cost <strong>in</strong>creases & <strong>in</strong>come reduction = poor,<br />

low or nil profit performance.<br />

So, back to the hipster, <strong>in</strong> this <strong>in</strong>stance who is at fault? Is it the hipster? Is it his manager or is it the proprietor? Who can blame the<br />

hipster, he was probably employed <strong>in</strong> that 'crazy get up' or someth<strong>in</strong>g similar <strong>in</strong> the first place and he is probably act<strong>in</strong>g as he has<br />

observed others <strong>in</strong> the organisation act, perhaps even the proprietor.<br />

Let’s face it, it starts and ends at the top, the proprietor, it is up to the proprietor to act!<br />

positive outcome, <strong>in</strong> other words more government support than the associated costs. In addition their staff will be more efficient,<br />

happier (so will the customers) and more likely to stay and grow with the bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
