Mayo Clinic translating research into better patient care In 2006, Mayo Clinic became one of the first institutions in the nation to receive a Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The five-year, $72.5 million grant supported Mayo Clinic’s Center for Translational Science Activities (CTSA) work to speed the translation of research results into therapies, tools and patient care practices that improve community health. The CTSA makes connections, finds best practices, bridges gaps, engages the community and builds on more than a century of Mayo Clinic medical research and education expertise. In June 2011, the NIH renewed Mayo’s CTSA award for five years, providing a $64.6 million grant to continue this important work. The funding also supports a broad spectrum of research training programs.• Center offers exciting look at Mayo Clinic research About Mayo Clinic Mayo Clinic is a nonprofit worldwide leader in medical care, research and education for people from all walks of life. The Research Information Center offers a multimedia tour of Mayo’s multidisciplinary research program and how it has (and is) changing the practice and delivery of medical care. “We are putting the face of research at Mayo Clinic where visitors can experience it,” says Eric Matteson, M.D., coordinator of the project. Visitors to the Research Information Center can experience: • Interactive digital displays • A mini-theater showcasing medical advancements • State-of-the-art scientific visualizations • Opportunities to learn about Mayo’s clinical research “Today’s research is tomorrow’s treatment,” says Robert Rizza, M.D., executive dean for Research. “We hope the center conveys to patients and the public the value that Mayo places on research in improving their lives and advancing medical science.” The Center is located in the Gonda building and is open during business hours. Bequests A family-first approach to charitable giving Provide for loved ones and support Franciscan Healthcare Foundation in your will or trust Did you know that in addition to passing assets to loved ones, your will or living trust can also be used to define your legacy? When you remember Mayo Clinic Health System through a gift to Franciscan Healthcare Foundation in your estate plans — known as a bequest — you join a special group of people that has helped make possible some of our most important advances. Advantages of bequests • Simplicity. A few sentences, called bequest language, in your will or living trust are all that is needed to complete your gift. • Flexibility. Until your will or trust goes into effect, you are free to alter your plans. • Versatility. You can bequeath a specific item, an amount of money, a gift contingent upon certain events or a percentage of your estate. • Tax benefits. Your estate is entitled to an unlimited estate tax charitable deduction for gifts to qualified charitable organizations like Franciscan Healthcare Foundation. How a bequest works Your estate planning attorney can help you structure a gift so your loved ones will be taken care of first after you’re gone. He or she will include our official bequest language in a will or living trust you create, or add it to existing documents through an amendment called a codicil.
