Buddy Program: The Office of Global Affairs offers the PEACE (Professional Ewhaians At Cultural Exchange) “buddy” program to facilitate your initial contact with Korean students, and adjustment to a new environment. Their activities are devoted to helping international students with their cultural immersion experiences and education at Ewha. Ewha buddies also organize their own programs to provide students with cultural experiences to make their stay in Seoul more memorable and exciting. Buddies also help international students to register for courses and provide survival hints they need on campus and in Korea as well. Buddies will contact International students by email before arrival. They will help you obtain detailed information such as housing, registration, and every thing you need for your arrival to Korea. Ewha Peace Buddy Program www.peacebuddy.com COURSE INFORMATION Courses: Ewha University offers a range of courses taught in English during its International Co-Ed Summer School, including courses in Business and Economics, Fine Arts and Design, Korean Language, Politics, Law and Culture, East Asian Studies/Korean Studies, and Hatyu: Korean Wave. A select number of courses from the above list will be offered, depending on student demand and instructor availability. All courses are 3 credits and each class normally meets eight hours a week for six weeks. Students who have sufficient Korean language proficiency are eligible to take regular Ewha Womans University summer session courses. The dates and times for these courses differ from the International Co-Ed Summer School and interested students should make sure they are able to attend the classes during these extra dates. Taking Ewha regular summer courses is only allowed on the condition that the student takes at least three credits from the Int'l Co-Ed Summer School. Students who wish to register for regular Ewha summer courses in addition to the International Co-Ed Summer School must include these courses in their Pre-Registration Form and also attach a one page personal statement in Korean to verify Korean language proficiency. Ewha regular summer courses http://summer.ewha.ac.kr/ then click on Courses at the top and select Session I. Korean Language Courses: Ewha also offers intensive Korean language classes. Classes meet four hours a day, five times a week, for six weeks. Classes, which are conducted in Korean, emphasize speaking and listening skills, systematic grammar acquisition, writing skills, and cross-cultural communication. There are beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Students who registered for the Korean language course will be assigned to a class based on the result of a placement test in writing, listening and interview. The test will be given on the morning of the Orientation Day. Korean language courses are worth 4 credits during the summer. Noncredit Classes and Activities: International Co-Ed Summer School participants will also have the option of participating in noncredit classes focused around traditional Korean culture, such as Korean folk dance, calligraphy, oriental painting, and taekwondo. There may be some additional fees for materials and supplies. There are also many Korean art, dance and music performances available, as well as English-subtitled movies available many evenings, weekly field trips every Friday; Seoul City tours, pottery making experience, Korean home experience, DMZ tour, musicals, etc. April 2011 8
Internships: The Office of Global Affairs offers unpaid internship opportunities for students participating in the International Co-Ed Summer School. Internships are offered in Korean companies, international organizations, consulting firms, and other work settings, and take place 3 to 4 weeks before or after the program. Candidates will be selected based upon their qualifications and the demands of the organizations to which they applied. Approved applicants will be notified individually. After being selected, applicants will not be allowed to quit their internships. Academic credit from IAP is not available to UW-Madison students participating in the internship program. Registration: International Co-Ed Summer School students are required to pre-register for courses prior to the start of the program. The Office of Global Affairs will provide pre-registration information prior to departure. Course Equivalent Requests and My Study Abroad Each course you take abroad must be assigned a UW-Madison “equivalent” course in order for your grades and credits to be recorded on your UW-Madison transcript. In order to establish UW-Madison course equivalents for your study abroad courses, you will submit a Course Equivalent Requests through your My Study Abroad account. Detailed information on the UW course equivalent process that you will use through your My Study Abroad account is available in the IAP Study Abroad Handbook. PASS/FAIL/DROP/AUDIT Please refer to the IAP Study Abroad Handbook for academic policies. CREDITS Conversions: One course is usually three credits with three classroom hours per week with the exception of Korean language courses. Credits will be converted on a one-to-one basis. For example, a 3-credit course at Ewha University will receive 3 credits at UW-Madison. Korean language courses are an exception and may earn 4 credits pending the level of Korean taken on the program. Limits and Load: UW-Madison students are required to take a minimum of 6 UW-Madison equivalent credits and may take no more than a maximum of 9 credits. GRADES AND GRADE CONVERSIONS Students will receive a letter grade on a scale from A to F. A grade of "A" is given for excellent performance; "B" for above average; "C" for average; "D" for minimally passing performance; and "F" for failure. In addition, "+" and "-" are used to further differentiate the student's performance with "+" indicating a superior performance in that letter grade, and "-" indicating a slightly weaker performance in that letter grade. Other grades include "W" (Withdrawal) and "P" (Pass). A student will receive a grade of "W" if he/she withdraws from the course. A student will receive a grade of "F" if he/she fails to attend classes without officially withdrawing from the course. Students who miss 1/6 or more of classes without prior special permission will receive an F automatically regardless of work completed. April 2011 9
