Time to GO HUNTING again!
September is the opening month of a
few hunting seasons in Kansas and by
all accounts, game is flourishing. From
birds to deer, 2014 has been pretty
good to the health of the wildlife we
hunt. Dove season opens September
1 st , with Whitetail Youth & Disability
season opening September 6 th .
Muzzleloader and Bow season opens
September 15 th .
I’ve seen pictures of deer and dove
that tell me that we have a great
harvest ahead of us. If you drive along
the roads around Lebo, you will find
many spots where the many dove are
roosting on telephone wires along the
roads. I have also seen several game
cameras that are capturing some very
nice looking deer out there! Needless to
say, if you haven’t been cleaning and
shooting your guns and bows, it’s time
to get after it! I am excited to get started
and I plan to be out there. Don’t forget
to pick up your hunting license and HIP
stamp for dove before you load up.
If you plan to hunt the public areas
around Melvern and hate to fill out the
daily hunting permits, I recommend
going to the KDWPT website and
registering for an iSportsman tag that
gives you a General Access Permit for
the entire season. You can access the
website online at: https://
kdwpt.isportsman.net/. With the
account, you are ready to "Check-In"
and "Check-Out" to a property from
anywhere using Computers and Smart
Phones (internet), or cell or land-line
phones…or you can continue to fill out
the paper permits every trip if you wish.
Fall is also a great time to wet a
line and try some lake fishing. The
Kansas Wildlife and Parks website
has a paragraph that talks about
fishing in our area. “Most parts of
the state are reporting fair to good
white bass and wiper, with an
excellent abundance at Coffey
County Lake and Cheney
Reservoir. Coffey County anglers
recommend twister tails and small
jigs and spinners.”
I’d like to also mention that my
nephew, Remington Wagner of Yates
Center, fished the National BASS
Nation High School Tournament
again this year. Unfortunately, he and
his fishing partner finished 38 th out
of 64 fishing teams at Kentucky
Lake in Paris, Tennessee. Remi will
be back at it next year since his Mom
and Dad bought a bass boat early
this summer and Remi plans to run it
ragged this year, and I’m gonna try to
help him do it!. Good Luck Buddy!
Have a great hunting season and
be safe out there!
