Departmental Review<br />

The Department of Dermatology at <strong>St</strong> Vincent’s University<br />

Hospital together with Hume <strong>St</strong>reet <strong>and</strong> <strong>St</strong> Michael’s Hospitals<br />

provide dermatology services for patients living in the East<br />

Coast Area Health Board <strong>and</strong> other health boards.<br />

Dermatology Day-<strong>Care</strong> Unit<br />

Narrowb<strong>and</strong> UVB phototherapy, PUVA therapy, short contact<br />

dithranol therapy, patient education,cryotherapy, dressings<br />

including scalp therapy were provided by Ms Sheila Ryan <strong>and</strong><br />

2,494 episodes were recorded.<br />

Clinical service<br />

Inpatients<br />

There were 98 <strong>St</strong> Vincent’s dermatology clinics at which 2,542<br />

patients (new referrals = 755) were treated.There were 49 <strong>St</strong><br />

Michael’s dermatology clinics at which 786 patients (328 new<br />

referrals) were treated. Outpatient investigation <strong>and</strong> therapy<br />

including cryotherapy, diagnostic punch biopsy, four layer<br />

b<strong>and</strong>aging,wart dressings/treatments, wound care <strong>and</strong> light<br />

cautery for macrocomedones was provided for 492 patients at<br />

SVUH <strong>and</strong> 224 patients at SMH.<br />

Patients were referred to Hume <strong>St</strong> hospital for photodynamic<br />

therapy, patch testing <strong>and</strong> phototherapy/PUVA <strong>and</strong> there were<br />

14,206 patient episodes.There were 637 new <strong>and</strong> 3615 return<br />

patients seen at clinics in the outpatients <strong>and</strong> in day-care.<br />

Twenty-one patients were admitted as urgent cases. Patients<br />

with chronic stable skin conditions,including psoriasis <strong>and</strong> atopic<br />

eczema,requiring five day elective inpatient dermatology<br />

nursing, were admitted to Hume <strong>St</strong> Hospital (276 patients).<br />

331 patients at <strong>St</strong> Vincent’s <strong>and</strong> 36 patients at <strong>St</strong> Michael’s had<br />

inpatient dermatology consultation for medical <strong>and</strong> surgical<br />

teams. Twenty-four of these patients required significant<br />

ongoing dermatology inpatient management at <strong>St</strong> Vincent’s.<br />

Day-care<br />

Extramural Theatre<br />

Day case surgery, predominantly for non-melanoma skin cancer<br />

<strong>and</strong> atypical melanocytic naevi,was performed for 137 patients<br />

at extramural theatre.<br />

Postgraduate <strong>and</strong> undergraduate education<br />

Higher Specialist training for specialist registrars in dermatology<br />

<strong>and</strong> General Professional training for senior house officers<br />

was provided at <strong>St</strong> Vincent’s <strong>and</strong> Hume <strong>St</strong> Hospitals.There<br />

was a weekly postgraduate dermatology session with<br />

dermatologists from <strong>St</strong> James’s <strong>and</strong> Adelaide/Meath<br />

Hospitals comprising journal club <strong>and</strong><br />

combined clinical case meeting at Hume<br />

<strong>St</strong>reet on Wednesday morning. The<br />

fortnightly histopathology<br />

meeting took place at <strong>St</strong><br />

Vincent’s University<br />

Hospital.<br />

<strong>St</strong> Mark’s Ward<br />

There were thirty-eight patient episodes for infusions of<br />

infliximab <strong>and</strong> immunoglobulin as day case patients.
