<strong>Russ</strong> <strong>Long</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued from page 1<br />
dear wife, Grace, had not yet returned<br />
<strong>to</strong> the st<strong>at</strong>es after nearly six weeks<br />
visit<strong>in</strong>g her African homeland, family<br />
and friends she hadn’t seen <strong>in</strong> many<br />
years. She knew Ruth and I had our<br />
act <strong>to</strong>gether, and <strong>in</strong>sisted we go when<br />
Tom Ineck had <strong>to</strong> pull out due <strong>to</strong> other<br />
commitments.<br />
The jo<strong>in</strong>t, as they say, was<br />
rock<strong>in</strong>’, sw<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g ‘n’ sway<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />
packed <strong>to</strong> the gills. It was stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
room only for the multitude of fellow<br />
players, fans and friends assembled<br />
there th<strong>at</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g. The program nam<strong>in</strong>g<br />
all of the tunes and astute c<strong>at</strong>s th<strong>at</strong><br />
gelled perfectly can be found on the<br />
back cover of this newsletter. Gerald<br />
rounded up an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g collection<br />
of musicians <strong>to</strong> showcase 17 of <strong>Russ</strong>’<br />
jazzy cre<strong>at</strong>ions, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a four-piece<br />
horn section led by master of ceremonies<br />
and former <strong>KC</strong> trumpeter Gary<br />
Sivis, with his “musical son” trumpeter<br />
Stan Kessler, new Westport Art Ensemble<br />
sax player Dave Chael, trombone<br />
veteran Arch Mart<strong>in</strong> and the<br />
amaz<strong>in</strong>g reedman Charles Perk<strong>in</strong>s,<br />
who I had never heard live before. I<br />
was blown away by his as<strong>to</strong>und<strong>in</strong>g<br />
chops.<br />

<strong>Russ</strong> <strong>Long</strong> takes a turn <strong>at</strong> the piano <strong>at</strong> Jard<strong>in</strong>e’s.<br />
In all, the horn arrangements<br />
came off so well th<strong>at</strong> <strong>Russ</strong> even mentioned<br />
re-record<strong>in</strong>g some of his tunes<br />
with this l<strong>in</strong>eup and new charts.<br />
Drummers Ray DeMarchi and<br />
Tommy Rusk<strong>in</strong> split sets with Gerald<br />
rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on bass, and Paul Smith on<br />
piano played his ass off as always.<br />
Everyone<br />
s<strong>to</strong>od when<br />
<strong>Russ</strong> got up <strong>to</strong><br />
do a few tunes<br />
and rem<strong>in</strong>isce<br />
about his 50-<br />
plus years <strong>in</strong><br />
show-biz.<br />
Even though<br />
<strong>Russ</strong> carries<br />
oxygen with<br />
him when he<br />
leaves his<br />
home, he<br />
Gerald Spaits and <strong>Russ</strong> <strong>Long</strong> visited the<br />
BMF museum <strong>in</strong> 2001.<br />
played and<br />
sang with<br />
strength and<br />
gus<strong>to</strong>, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g his throng of tearyeyed<br />
followers <strong>to</strong> their feet several<br />
times. And if this wasn’t enough of a<br />
tre<strong>at</strong>, 50 years’ worth of Kansas<br />
City’s gre<strong>at</strong>est divas were present <strong>to</strong><br />
open their mouths and hearts and s<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>to</strong> the man who has provided such<br />
beautiful melodies and s<strong>to</strong>ries for them<br />
<strong>to</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g, as well as accompany them,<br />
probably from coast <strong>to</strong> coast, cover<strong>in</strong>g<br />
over a half century—Karr<strong>in</strong><br />
Allyson, Julie Turner, Carol Comer and<br />
Marilyn Maye.<br />
Ruth and I were sitt<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong><br />
earshot of these legendary songstresses,<br />
which was a trip <strong>in</strong> itself,<br />
see<strong>in</strong>g everyone from so many eras<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g such a good time, <strong>to</strong>gether all<br />
<strong>at</strong> the same time. Each artist had her<br />
own little th<strong>in</strong>g go<strong>in</strong>’, remember<strong>in</strong>g all<br />
the gigs with <strong>Russ</strong>, often resembl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a roast, as the laughter and tears<br />
flowed like the w<strong>in</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> <strong>night</strong>…<strong>in</strong><br />
abundance.<br />

By the<br />
time you read<br />
this, my found<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
will have<br />
w<strong>in</strong>ed, d<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
and met with<br />
Gerald and the<br />
rest of the Nebraska<br />
consultants<br />
<strong>to</strong> discuss<br />
our <strong>in</strong>volvement<br />
<strong>in</strong> see<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> all<br />
of <strong>Russ</strong>’ compositions<br />
are<br />
copyrighted,<br />
published and<br />
professionally charted <strong>to</strong> stand the test<br />
of time.<br />
Even though the years and some<br />
health problems have taken some of<br />
the starch out of <strong>Russ</strong> <strong>Long</strong>, he’s still<br />
the hippest of hip and the coolest of<br />
cool. The Berman Music Found<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
will be eternally gr<strong>at</strong>eful <strong>to</strong> Gerald<br />
Spaits for gett<strong>in</strong>g us <strong>in</strong>volved with<br />
help<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> produce <strong>Russ</strong>’ dynamite<br />
“Never Let Me Go” CD and, now,<br />
this tribute…a <strong>night</strong> <strong>to</strong> remember always.<br />
