Concept image by Liquid Blu: possible future development Healthy and active master plans Council is finalising several sports complex master plans as part of a push to create healthy and active communities on the Coast. Following extensive community consultation, the Beerwah Sports Ground Master Plan, including the Beerwah Aquatic Centre Feasibility Plan, was recently adopted by council. Key recommendations within the Beerwah Sports Ground Master Plan focus on: •• recognition of the functionality of the existing layout and buildings •• improvements to vehicle access and parking •• new or extended sports facilities •• lighting and drainage improvements to existing fields •• improved access and circulation for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists •• equitable access improvements •• improved usage of the Beerwah High School sports fields •• provision for an expanded Aquatic Centre. Some of the recommended aquatic centre upgrades include: •• a new indoor heated pool •• upgraded children’s play pool •• new entry into main building, additional toilets, change rooms, separate kitchen, kiosk and office •• extension of existing 25 metre pool into a 50 metre swimming pool with disability access and lighting •• provision of extensive shade sails over concrete concourses. As part of the Sunshine Coast Sport and Active Recreation Plan 2011-2026 recommendations, council is currently working on master plans for several other community sports grounds including Ballinger Park Sports Complex, Caloundra Central Park Sport and Recreation Precinct and Coolum Sports Complex. New online CommunityHub Online rates registration coming soon Sunshine Coast ratepayers will be able to register via council’s website to receive their rates online in time for the next rates period in January next year. The registration service was in the final development phase when Encompass went to print. Once registered, residents will also be able to tailor their areas of interest around other council information and services, making doing business with council even easier. Ratepayers who participated in the successful ‘rates via email’ trial earlier this year, will need to register to continue to receive their rates notice online. With around 150,000 rates notices issued every six months, council is committed to improving its rates notice distribution and overall process. This is a great environmentally friendly initiative that will reduce reliance on paper copies. If you are interested in signing up, visit council’s website during December. A major revamp of council’s Community Information Services website is underway and it promises to deliver a multimedia, interactive experience to users by the end of this year. The state-of-the-art CommunityHub will allow better communication between council, community groups and residents. Free holiday buses These summer holidays, keep your wallet in your pocket and travel for free! From Boxing Day until 8 January, every public bus service on the Sunshine Coast, including TransLink’s Sunbus, Hinterland Connect, Maleny-Landsborough- Beerwah, Council Cabs and Flexilink will be free. Free Holiday Buses aims to increase public transport usage, decrease traffic on the roads and relieve parking pressure during the busiest time of the year. Integrated Transport Systems Portfolio Councillor Vivien Griffin said the best way to secure better, more frequent services on the Coast was to encourage more people to use public transport. “This wonderful initiative gives residents the chance to try before they buy and really give public transport a go without being out of pocket,” she said. “And it’s working; last year more than 200,000 passengers jumped aboard the services during the free holiday bus period – that’s an increase of more than 30 per cent from the previous year. “But more telling is that 38 per cent of survey respondents said they would not have made their trip using public transport if there were no Free Holiday Buses.” Results from 1000 surveys also showed that satisfaction was high: •• 60 per cent of respondents said the Free Holiday Bus program has improved their awareness of public transport on the Sunshine Coast •• 68 per cent were residents of the Sunshine Coast •• 95 per cent supported the initiative. Free Holiday Buses is a joint initiative of Sunshine Coast Council and TransLink, funded through your Public Transport Levy. Keeping you moving If you’re 60 or over, have a disability or mobility impairment and need to get to the shops – Council Cabs is for you. Booking a cab is simple; just call the 24-hour booking line on 1300 139 433 by 12.30pm the day before your trip. The service operates once a week and is limited to certain areas. The fare is $2 each way for eligible residents and their accompanying carers or minors. Flexilink is another transport alternative. This service includes a fleet of taxis which run like buses, with designated routes and timetables. They operate in areas where there is little or no public transport, with all services connecting to existing transport networks. SUNSHINE COAST Flexilink runs three return trips per day, six days a week. A single trip costs $2 for adults and $1 for children.
