highlights of the <strong>2013</strong> tanglewood season<br />
The <strong>2013</strong> <strong>Boston</strong> <strong>Symphony</strong> <strong>Orchestra</strong> season at Tanglewood<br />
opens with an all-Tchaikovsky program led by Rafael Frühbeck<br />
de Burgos and featuring renowned violinist Joshua Bell (7/5).<br />
Maestro Frühbeck de Burgos continues the weekend with<br />
Mahler’s <strong>Symphony</strong> No. 3 (7/6), and returns to lead the BSO with<br />
Lynn Harrell performing Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 (7/14). BSO<br />
Conductor Emeritus Bernard Haitink makes a welcome return<br />
to Tanglewood for a program pairing Mozart’s Violin Concerto<br />
No. 5 and Mahler’s Fourth <strong>Symphony</strong> (8/17), then concludes the<br />
BSO season with the traditional performance of Beethoven’s<br />
<strong>Symphony</strong> No. 9 (8/25).<br />
Other favorite guest conductors on the BSO podium this<br />
<strong>summer</strong> include Vladimir Jurowski leading Jean-Yves Thibaudet<br />
in Liszt’s Totentanz for piano and orchestra (7/19); Christoph<br />
Eschenbach as conductor-pianist in an all-Mozart program with<br />
soprano Christine Schäfer (7/26) and leading Garrick Ohlsson in<br />
Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (7/28); and Stéphane Denève<br />
conducting Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with Leif Ove<br />
Andsnes and Poulenc’s Stabat Mater with the Tanglewood<br />
Festival Chorus (8/2). With Charles Dutoit conducting,<br />
Lang Lang performs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on a<br />
program also including Ravel’s complete Daphnis et Chloé (8/3);<br />
on the next afternoon, Yo-Yo Ma joins Maestro Dutoit and the<br />
BSO for Dvořák’s Cello Concerto (8/4). Christoph von Dohnányi<br />
conducts three concerts this <strong>summer</strong>, with violinist Gil Shaham<br />
(8/9), pianist Yefim Bronfman (8/10), and pianist Emanuel Ax<br />
(8/18). Christian Zacharias is both conductor and pianist for an<br />
all-Beethoven program including the Piano Concerto No. 2 and<br />
Pastoral <strong>Symphony</strong> (8/11).<br />
Other Shed highlights include a one-time-only Tanglewood<br />
performance with the BSO playing the score to the classic film<br />
West Side Story as a newly remastered print is displayed on<br />
