PHARMACOLOGY<br />

Drugs in <strong>Dentistry</strong> — Including Herbal and Natural Products<br />

Course Description:<br />

Latest information on conventional drugs, herbal<br />

supplements and nutraceuticals having an impact on<br />

dental and dental hygiene practice. Discussion will<br />

include new medical drugs, new intranasal ketorolac<br />

(Sprix), OTC ibupr<strong>of</strong>en-acetaminophen combination,<br />

latest 2012 Agency guidelines for cardioprotective<br />

aspirin use in men and women, new 2011 ADA<br />

guidelines for management <strong>of</strong> drug induced osteonecrosis<br />

<strong>of</strong> the jawbone; antibiotic update including joint<br />

prosthesis prophylaxis as <strong>of</strong> December 2012; antidepressant<br />

update; four newly approved blood thinners<br />

to replace Plavix and Coumadin.<br />

Herbal supplements, free radicals, reactive oxygen<br />

species, antioxidants, chocolate, red wine, acai,<br />

pomegranate, bi<strong>of</strong>lavonoids, Co-Q-10, and dental<br />

herbal products will be discussed. Medical concerns<br />

about herbals including those that cause bleeding<br />

described. The latest update on chondroitin and glucosamine/MSM.<br />

Nutraceuticals, foods and their medical<br />

uses are discussed including, omega-3 fatty acids<br />

and vitamin D. The latest news on CRP levels and<br />

the risk <strong>of</strong> heart attack; how to elevate good cholesterol;<br />

and the different benefits <strong>of</strong> moderate alcohol<br />

consumption in males and females. Finally, what<br />

supplements to take for maximum health.<br />

Course objectives:<br />

• Describe the latest guidelines on antibiotic use,<br />

analgesic use; management <strong>of</strong> drug-induced osteonecrosis<br />

<strong>of</strong> the jaw; antibiotic prophylaxis <strong>of</strong> joint<br />

prosthesis patients<br />

• List the important antioxidants and herbal supplements<br />

and compare their health benefits<br />

• List the most recent findings on cardioprotective<br />

aspirin and the management <strong>of</strong> patients on Pradaxa<br />

and other new blood thinners<br />

• Describe the new findings on omega-3 fatty acids,<br />

vitamin D supplements, moderate alcohol consumption;<br />

describe the relationship between CRP, periodontal<br />

disease and risk <strong>of</strong> heart attack<br />

Keep Complex Imaging Simple: Applications And<br />

Interpretation Of Cone Beam Computed Tomography<br />

Course Description:<br />

This lecture series provides an overview <strong>of</strong> CBCT<br />

technology, advantages, applications, doses, and<br />

guidelines. Interpretation <strong>of</strong> select cases will be<br />

included as examples. It will also demonstrate how<br />

CBCT technology improves implant diagnosis and<br />

treatment planning, assists the clinician with diagnosis<br />

<strong>of</strong> periodontal disease, and guides the clinician<br />

for ideal implant placement. Additionally, applications<br />

in Endodontics will be discussed at length, including<br />

surgery. Several cases will be discussed.<br />

COURSE OBJECTIVES:<br />

• Understand the rationale for using CBCT in<br />

dentistry<br />

• Understand the principles <strong>of</strong> interpretation<br />

• Understand radiation safety and biology principles,<br />

doses, guidelines for use<br />

• Identify advantages <strong>of</strong> CBCT for implant and<br />

periodontal diagnoses<br />

• Become familiar with techniques based on CBCT<br />

to facilitate and optimize dental implant placement<br />

• Understand the applications <strong>of</strong> CBCT in<br />

endodontics, including non-surgical and surgical<br />

endodontics<br />
