Comenius-Project “Bringing
Young Europeans Together
Through The London
Olympics”.
This Comenius project is about bringing students from three different
countries together to examine and promote the Olympic and Paralympic
ideals and values. Involved are four schools: Two from Germany (Lily-Braun-
Oberschule Berlin and Sportschule Potsdam), one from the French Caribbean
St. Martin and Lordswood Boys’ School from the UK.
On Monday morning we had to wake up at 2:00am and we had to be at school
for 3:30am. Not a good start. I couldn’t even get up. The trip was so long

because we had a connection via Amsterdam and 8 hours until the next flight.
But times flies when you’re having fun so we played football with a tennis ball,
played cards, got to know everyone in the group, Mr Arshad, Miss Jones, Ms
Stait, ten boys from year 8 and five from year 11. Once we landed in Berlin we
were so excited! It had been quite a long journey but now we were there.
On Tuesday we got to know the German students. We all worked together on
a logo for the Comenius project and spent the morning in an art workshop
called Zitadelle Spandau. We had lunch in their school (Lily-Braun-Oberschule)
and in the afternoon we had an IT workshop on how to stay in contact via
e-Twinning. Then, we went off to explore Berlin. We saw the Brandenburg Gate
and climbed around in the Holocaust Memorial.
On Wednesday we took the city train to Potsdam to visit our second partner
school Sportschule Potsdam. This school is big!! We had a look at the indoor
athletics hall, the swimming pools, some handball training and in the afternoon
we joined in with the girls’ team football training. Luckily, we got away without
having to play against them....Once school was over the German Students
joined us on a tour around Potsdam Christmas Market. In the evening we had
Döner Kebabs – did you know they were invented in Berlin?
On Thursday the German students came over to our rowing club – and we
didn’t have to walk the 20 minutes to the train station for once! We worked
in groups on the future of the project. How can we stay in contact? How does
the steering group organise itself? What do we want? When do we meet up
again? What trips and meetings are planned? In the afternoon we went on a
tour around the Berlin Olympic Stadium. It was massive! It’s the place where
Jessie Owens won four Olympic gold medals in 1936 and where the Football
World Cup final in 2006 took place. Then we went to Potsdamer Platz and saw
the Checkpoint Charlie on Berlin Friedrichstraße.
On the last day we had to get up in the middle of the night again to catch our
flights back home, this time via Paris. To round the whole trip off we missed our
connection and once again had to wait for 7 hours for the next flight. Luckily,
there were many PS3s that we could play on.
The journeys apart – we all really enjoyed this trip, we have seen lots, we met
many nice new people and we want to go back!
PS The Berliners are coming over in September, on a direct flight...
