4 C A R I N G S u m m e r 2 0 0 9 w w w . c a r c . i n f o The outstanding 2009 Build America Team and additional volunteers completed a most special project in July Build America Teams Up with CARC on a Very Special Project Since 2003, Build America has taken members of Pi Kappa Phi across the country to make camps and communities more accessible for people with disabilities through construction, dedication and hard work. Since 2004, Build America and CARC have partnered every summer on a one-day construction project, making this alliance the longest running collaboration in Build America’s short, but stellar history. This year, Build America completed a very special assignment at the West Englewood Frick Center. The “gazebo project,” was envisioned by former CARC employee, the late Arne Haug, as a place where West Englewood Frick clients, families and staff could gather and relax. Even with 25 motivated volunteers, the complex project became a four day job—taken place over a four-year period: the one day each summer that Build America teamed up with CARC. In July, the Build America Team and additional volunteers pounded the last nail to finish “Arne’s Place.” Once again, CARC received additional volunteer support from Bill Robinson, Don Wesselhoff, Rick Hoffman, and Bruce Kneeland who led the construction efforts. Marshall Barnes Awards at its 2009 Annual Meeting recognizing the accomplishments of the individuals and families support by the agency. The awards are named in honor of Marshall Barnes—an icon of the Chicago Financial District and a long term former President and board member of CARC who fashioned a profound and lasting legacy of leadership and vision at CARC. The Awards honor the courage and diligence required to achieve significant breakthroughs.
