The Power of People and Possibilities
CARC becomes “Envision” on July 1, 2010
Empowering people. Creating possibilities. We are now Envision!
Envision “change”…and the hope that accompanies more meaningful possibilities for people with
developmental disabilities. Envision “new beginnings” founded upon the strength of a rock-solid,
time-tested foundation. Envision “empowered people” who have the skills and confidence to identify,
pursue, and realize life-changing goals.
CARC is proud to announce that we have changed our organizational name to “Envision Unlimited.” We move
forward confidently—energized by a united resolve to rise above any and all challenges before us. We move
forward as an even stronger agency with the same mission to provide quality services to persons with developmental
disabilities and other special needs that promote choice, independence and community integration.
As we have done for nearly 50 years, we will continue to encourage the individuals and families whom
we support to move confidently in the direction of their dreams and live the lifetimes they have imagined.
Paul J. Piet named Chairman of the Board
In July, Paul J. Piet will become the Chairman of the Board for Envision. Mr. Piet
follows the successful tenure of Robert Lewandowski who afforded leadership
and guidance during an eventful and difficult three-year period.
Mr. Piet has prior experience as Chairman of the Board, serving skillfully in a prior
term. He provided the impetus for the agency to launch the Goose Open Golf Outing
in 1996 and has worked diligently to expand participants and proceeds every year
since. This August marks the 14th Anniversary of the first Goose Open.
Robert Lewandowski has been an agency resource for over 30 years. While he has
served as Chairman of the Board several times in the past, there have been no more
important terms as his most recent. Mr. Lewandowski provided a steady hand and
sound judgment during an arduous three years in which the agency was tested
sternly yet continually moved forward despite the significant challenges.
We thank Robert Lewandowski for his exemplary service and for a job most well done.
We offer Paul J. Piet our congratulations on being named as Envision’s “first” Chairman
and look forward to many successes and breakthroughs throughout his tenure.
Dedication
1964
» 1964 CARC FORMED
CARC formed in 1964 from the merger
of three agencies supporting persons
with developmental disabilities.
1975
The Education for All Handicapped
Children Act was enacted by the
United States Congress in 1975.
Until that time, many states had
laws that explicitly excluded children
with certain types of disabilities
from attending public school.
Dominick’s and Rebuilding Together * Metro Chicago
Named as Volunteers of Distinction
On April 10, 2010, Rebuilding Together * Metro Chicago
teamed up with Dominick’s—with a special assist from
Clark Construction, to revitalize CARC’s Clark Street
facility. More than 60 volunteers worked on a variety of projects
including interior painting, exterior patio renovation, the creation
of a sensory/relaxation room and two stunning wall-sized murals.
After this day of service was completed, both the interior and
exterior had a dazzling facelift.
The Clark Street location is the hub for the agency’s north-side
operations and is home for CARC’s Autism Program and CARC’s
Seniors Program North, as is headquarters for Early Intervention
and the North-side Community Living Program.
In the spirit of volunteerism and community partnership, the
mission of Rebuilding Together * Metro Chicago is to improve the
homes and neighborhoods of elderly, disabled and low-income
residents so that they may continue to live in warmth, safety and
comfort. Rebuilding Together * Metro Chicago has partnered with
CARC for three consecutive years on large-scale projects which
have utilized the service of hardworking volunteers from some of
Chicago’s most successful corporations.
This year, over 60 enthusiastic, talented employees from
Dominick’s partnered with Rebuilding Together * Metro Chicago
and Clark Construction to renovate CARC’s Clark Street facility.
Because of the tremendous effort and growing relationship,
CARC is honored to name Rebuilding Together * Metro Chicago
and Dominick’s as our latest Community Partner of Distinction.
Ryan Erickson Receives
the “Volunteer of
Distinction” Award
In 2006, a handful of socially conscious
University of Chicago students took it upon
themselves to make a difference in the lives
of persons with developmental disabilities.
These students created “U-CARC” – The
University of Chicago’s Chapter of CARC,
and the group formed with the gallant
purpose of furthering CARC’s mission within
the collegiate community.
Since day one, Ryan Erickson has been
an essential member—his dedication and
leadership has kept the group strong and
focused. U-CARC has indeed advanced
CARC’s mission of providing quality services
to persons with developmental disabilities
and other special needs that promote choice,
independence and community integration
by volunteering at several agency programs.
For his dedication to CARC and his drive
in sustaining and building U-CARC, we are
honored to present the 2010 Volunteer of
Distinction Award to Ryan Erickson.
Girl Scout Troop 20145 is a remarkable group in many ways. The first feature you
cannot help but notice is its size: there are only two members. The second quality
you cannot overlook is that what the Troop may lack in numbers, it more than makes
up for in sheer dedication and hard work.
Troop 20145 is composed of two remarkable teenagers: Jillian Dreixler and Blair Marshall.
They contacted CARC to see if they could perform a volunteer activity at an agency program
site. After some choices were discussed, Troop 20145 decided to direct their efforts at the
Whitehill CILA, and create a beautiful backyard area—complete with a vegetable garden
from which residents may enjoy fresh tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and basil.
The volunteer day was set for June 5, 2010. Yet because of the troop size, Jillian and Blair,
accompanied by their mothers, Julie Dreixler and Beth Marshall, visited Whitehill on the 5
consecutive weekends prior to the event, preparing for the actual volunteer day. After their
preparatory work was completed, the girls and their mothers would visit with Whitehill
residents. Friendships between the girls and Whitehill residents formed quickly.
On the actual volunteer day, the skies opened with a cloudburst. This may have dissuaded
many groups from continuing…but not Troop 20145. The girls just worked through the downpour
and when the weather cleared, the project had been completed. Whitehill residents had
a beautiful backyard with benches, an enclosed garden, hanging baskets of colorful flowers,
a bird feeder and a new bed of plants.
We thank troop members, Blair Marshall and Jillian Dreixler for their simply extraordinary
level of dedication and diligence. Likewise we thank “moms” and troop leaders, Beth
Marshall and Julie Dreixler, along with fellow Girl Scout leader, Kirsten Corbett and “troop
dad,” John Dreixler for supporting the girls’ strong efforts every step of the way.
on the current fiscal year and set a course for advancement
in the year ahead. This year, Gov. Quinn received the 2010
Legislative Leadership Award which was accepted by his Chief of
Staff, Jerry Stermer. Additionally, Robert Lewandowski passed the
torch of direction to Paul J. Piet, who will become Chairman of the
Board in fiscal year 2011.
As is our tradition, the R. Marshall Barnes Awards were presented
to individuals and families who made great strides in their journeys
toward lifetimes with more meaningful opportunities.
Marshall Barnes, a long-time board member and former president
of CARC, guided the agency through a period of great expansion.
Through his dedication and vision, Mr. Barnes left an indelible
impression on the agency. The awards, named in his honor, are the
highest accolades presented formally to the people we support.
