The Driving Force Behind
Better Turf: Aeration.
Aeration is an important part of maintaining a
healthy course and general ground areas. It
relieves compaction, allows water and gas to
infiltrate the soil, and mixes plant material with
the soil to aid in the breakdown of organic
matter. Here are the proven successful ways to
aerate and Toro ® has the perfect tine to match
each of these aeration choices:
• Core aerification, which is the most versatile
cultivation method, meets several conditions at
once. It’s the best way to control buildup of undecomposed
organic matter in the root zone in
sand-based soils. The removal of cores following
aerification and replacing them with sand top
dressing is the best method of keeping root zone
organic matter within healthy limits.
Toro ® Titan tines meet all of these coring
needs. With thinner walls for improved hole
quality, optimized end taper for improved core
pulling, and a slower wear rate, Titan tines are
the perfect choice.
• Solid tine aerification, which provides enhanced
gas movement between the root zone and the
atmosphere is another method of aerification.
Solid tines cause less injury to the turf, which is
perfect for periods of high usage. It consists of
driving a hole into the ground, compacting the
soil temporarily, which fills in slowly over time,
but limits the disruption to the surface area.
Titan tines offer more sizes and longer lengths.
They also provide tips designed to stay sharper,
longer.
• Slicing or Cross aerification, which offers
treatments causing minimal injury for more
sensitive times of the year. Titan tines offer long
life with use of alloy steel and a unique
manufacturing process, longer lengths, and tips
with a small 1/16 inch flat area to improve
handling comfort.
Aeration is the key to keeping your course and
grounds looking great. It’s important to aerate as
often as possible especially when it comes to high
traffic areas and with Titan tines on your team
you’ll know you have the best equipment to meet
all of your aeration needs successfully.
Achieving The Right Solution
Requires A New Way Of Thinking.
TINE TERMINOLOGY
As the technology of an industry advances, it’s
important to communicate the information in an
easy to understand way. Currently the outside
diameter of the cutting tip is used to set the size
of the tine. This leads to confusion as to the core
diameter after aeration due to different wall
thicknesses. Toro ® has developed a new practice
to size tines. The new size configuration not only
uses the ID of the cutting tip (core diameter) it
also has a repeated step in diameter across all
coring tines.
For example, a “200” tine is 0.200 inch inside
diameter and a “300” tine is 0.300 inch inside
diameter. The core size is now listed in 200, 300,
400, 500, and 600. This makes sizing very easy.
The solid tines are done in a similar way with the
size referring to the outside diameter rather than
the core size.
To determine the size of a new Titan tine you
need to use, compared to what you’re currently
using, simply reference the chart below:
Old New Titan Core Core
Practice Tine Size Diameter Area
1/4" 200 0.200 in 0.031 sq-in
3/8" 300 0.300 in 0.071 sq-in
1/2" 400 0.400 in 0.126 sq-in
5/8" 500 0.500 in 0.196 sq-in
3/4" 600 0.600 in 0.283 sq-in
Example:
The tine listed below is a Titan Max Quad 200 tine.
The ID (core diameter) is .200 and under the old
practice would have been known as 1/4" tine.
Frequently
Asked Questions...
Q. Where are Titan Tines made?
A. All materials and components including packaging of Titan tines
are manufactured in the USA exclusively for Toro.
Q. What is the difference between a Titan Max tip and the
Titan HD Fairway tip?
A. Titan Max tines have a unique carbide blend offering the greatest
longevity of any carbide tipped tine on the market. Carbide tipped
tines provide the best extended wear benefits in most conditions.
While carbide is very durable it can also be susceptible to
breakage in extreme conditions.
The Titan HD Fairway has a hardened tip which provides
extended wear at a much lower cost than carbide and is much
less susceptible to breakage in extreme conditions. A Patent
Pending manufacturing process increases wear rates over
standard Titan Fairway tines by 75% in most conditions.
Expected wear rates will be reduced in extreme rocky conditions
but will still offer improvements over standard Titan Fairway tines
and provide a good cost alternative to carbide tipped tines, which
may be susceptible to breakage in rocky areas.
Q. What is normal wear expectancy for a Titan tine and
Titan Max?
A. Many competitive versions have promoted longevity based on
holes aerated. This is a very difficult measurement considering
wear rates may vary greatly depending on size of area impacted,
application and soil conditions.
Expected longevity of a standard Titan tine should be three times
that of a classic original version. A Titan Max tine will perform
three times or greater than standard Titan Tines. Testing
conducted confirms our Titan Max tine will last 19% and 24%
longer than leading competitive versions.
Q. Why are there so many varieties of tines?
A. We offer such a wide variety of tines to give customers the
greatest flexibility in aeration choice. Every customer has a
unique soil situation and variety provides the opportunity to
choose a tine best suited for your need.
5 www.toro.com
Q. Do Toro Titan tines fit other manufacturers’ aerator
models?
A. Yes, Toro Titan tines will fit most John Deere ® , Ryan ® and
Jacobsen ® aerators. Please reference the fit up chart located in
your Titan Tine catalog. Mounting size of the tine should be used
to match dimensions of aerator tine head. We also offer two
sleeves to convert Titan 3/8" mount tines to 1/2" and 5/8"
mounting sizes used on most Ryan products. Contact your Toro
distributor for more information.
Q. What do I do if my tines are plugging?
A. Hollow tines are more prone to plugging than side eject tines.
This situation is more likely in heavier soil conditions with longer
and larger ID tines. Switch to side eject tines and allow the soil to
dry out a bit more.
Longer tines used with some equipment are reaching deeper. If
the tines are pulling the heavier soil below the previous aeration
depths, then the use of a side eject larger coring tine can
minimize the plugging. Small rocks within sand can cause both
hollow and side eject tines to plug. If possible, try using a larger
coring diameter tine.
Q. What do I do if tines seem to be breaking prematurely?
A. Be sure the tine selected is of appropriate structure for the area.
Tines designed for greens and tees are not necessarily designed
to withstand impacts with hidden objects such as stones and tree
roots. Wear around the side eject window will eventually weaken
the tine and should be replaced prior to this point.
Q. What do I do if the cores are being left in the turf (often
referred to as the cookie cutter effect)?
A. Soil with higher moisture content can cause a ‘hydraulic lock’ on
the core and resist removal. Wait for the moisture level to
decrease or hold off on irrigation.
Other types of tines can make a difference. For example change
from a hollow tine to a side eject tine or even the coring diameter.
DETERMINE THE TOTAL SURFACE AREA
AFFECTED AND AMOUNT OF MATERIAL REMOVED.
TINE SELECTION GUIDE
STEP ONE
The first step is to find holes per square foot.
If you know your lateral and forward spacing, find holes
per square foot on the Holes Per Square Foot table.
Example:
Lateral Spacing = 2.00
Forward Spacing = 2.00
Holes Per Square Foot = 36.00
If you are not sure of your forward and lateral spacing, but know your aerator model
number go to the Pick A Model table and pick your spacing options. This table will also
help you determine the proper turf holder based on your tine configuration.
STEP TWO
To determine the total surface area affected and volume of soil removed when aerating,
reference the Percent Surface Area Affected/Volume Removed table. All you need to
know is holes per square foot, core diameter (ID), and the depth* at which you are
aerating.
Example:
Holes Per Square Feet = 36.00
Core Diameter = .300
Depth = 3.0
Percent Surface Area Affected = 1.77%
Volume Removed = 4.42 cu-ft per 1,000 sq/ft
* Tine depth can vary based on machine set-up.
