The Fiftieth Anniversary of the Second Vatican Council
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This is the second of six short articles to mark the 50 th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council.
The first article explained Pope John XXIII’s pastoral purpose in calling the Council. He desired to unite a
world at war with itself by using the unity of the Church as a catalyst to bring all peoples together in dialogue.
This second article takes up the first document approved by the Pope and Bishops in Council: the Constitution
on the Sacred Liturgy.
The central act of the Church’s worship, the celebration of the Mass or the Eucharist, began on Calvary, when
Jesus, as priest, offered his very self as victim for our sins on the altar of his cross. Christ’s historical self-sacrifice
is made sacramentally present each time the Mass is offered. We worship God by participating in the offering of
the Mass and joining our self-sacrifice to that of the Lord.
The Council wanted to foster greater participation, both interiorly in spirit and exteriorly in actions, in the celebration
of the Mass. The Council called for preserving the elements of the rite that come to us from apostolic
times but adapting them so that the language and the actions of the Mass would make it easier for all the baptized
to take part in them. The goal of liturgical reform was to have the Mass, in a sense, speak for itself.
The reform of the liturgical rites placed particular emphasis on Scripture. It called for liturgical music in vernacular
languages, as appropriate. It mandated homiletic preaching as integral to the rite itself. It made clear
the connection between worship of God and action for justice and peace and charity in the world he created and
his Son died to save.
While the Eucharist is the summit of the Church’s worship of God, the Council encouraged popular devotions
to the Blessed Virgin Mary, to the reserved Sacrament of the Altar, to the saints in the liturgical calendar, and
popular participation in the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours.
The goal of deeper and more authentic participation in the liturgy is to imbue all believers with a sense of time
centered on the mysteries of Christ’s life, death and resurrection. Liturgical time keeps us living in the Kingdom
of God, even as we work out our salvation in this world’s temporal rhythms. The Mass bridges the gap between
earth and heaven; it is the biblical Banquet of the Lamb.
Sometimes younger Catholics will ask what they get out of coming to a Mass they might not understand well and
are sometimes not interested in. What do they (and everyone else) get? They get the eternal life promised by the
Lord to those who “eat his flesh and drink his blood,” taking into our still mortal bodies the seeds of immortality
in Christ’s risen body. That’s not something one “gets” anywhere else: eternal life.
Fr. Nam’s Homily
Corpus Christi celebrates and reminds us that Jesus is truly present to His
people under the guise of bread and wine. Today’s gospel recalls for us the
words that Jesus spoke at the Last Supper. There surrounded by His disciples,
“he took bread, blessed it, broke it, gave it to them and said: “Take it, this is
my body.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and gave it to them, and said:
“This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.”
Today the priests and the believers have gathered around the altar to speak His
words… “This is my body; this is my blood.” These words spoken over gifts of bread and wine
become the reality. For Jesus is truly and really present each time we celebrate the Eucharist; each
time we gather to proclaim His death and rising until he will come again. This morning we come to
the church and receive the body and blood of Christ, who was born in Bethlehem, the same Christ
who walked along the shore of Galilee and taught the disciples; and the same Christ who died on the
cross and buried in the tomb. Now a day, there is no single tomb for Jesus, but rather, there are
hundreds of thousands of His tombs throughout the world. His body rest in the tabernacles in the
Catholic Churches in all parts of the world and in our souls.
Every Mass the priests proclaim “Body of Christ, Blood of Christ” and we respond “Amen”. The
body and blood of Christ are food and drink for us. They are nourishment and strength for our
journey. They speak of our unity with Jesus and our unity with one another. They speak the reality of
Jesus whom we receive, the Body of Christ; and we are: The Mystical Body of Christ.
We are the Body of Christ in this world today. We continue Jesus’ mission in our world. We are
called to be the hands and feet, the mouth and the heart of Christ in our world today. We are invited
to make Jesus present into the world in the same way He makes himself present in the Eucharist. We
are the Body of Christ when we receive the hunger, the poor, and the friend in need of consolation,
the son or daughter forgiven. As we open our heart our heart to the Mystical Body of Christ in need
throughout the world so we are more like Jesus, who sacrificed himself to be our food and drink.
Today, on this solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, we come together here in community in
the presence of our Lord. As we celebrate the sacrifice and the victory of Jesus, we believe that when
we receive the Holy Eucharist we show our faith and our love to the world. Amen.
Much of what we are able to accomplish here at Immaculate Conception is due to the
hard work and generous support of our volunteers, who serve as Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors,
Ministers of Care, and Altar Servers. We could not celebrate the Mass without the contribution
of our parishioners. We would like to invite you to consider volunteering for any of the below
ministries. We are in desperate need of more volunteers and are hopeful that you might feel
called to these very worthy ministries.
“Can you hear me, now?”
We are in the process
of enhancing our
Sound System in the
Church. We have
unique challenges
based upon the
architectural design
of our church. Some
parishioners find it
difficult to hear. Please feel free to let us know
what your concerns are regarding the system.
1. Can you hear / understand better from one or
more of the microphones? For example the pulpit
and altar but not the Priest chair.
2. Is the system loud enough? It is set to
accommodate a variety of speakers who have
different abilities to project their own voice.
3. We have purchased and installed new
microphones for the cantors within the last week.
Are these sufficient to understand the cantor?
We have purchased additional hearing assistance
devices. Please check with one of the deacons if
you would like to use one.
Finally, it is very helpful to know where you sit in
church. If you are closer /further from a speaker
makes a difference.
Thank you for your help in making our Sunday
Worship meaningful for all who come to IC
IN MEMORIAM
A memorial Mass was celebrated for Grace Viti
Garlasco at Immaculate Conception church on May 26. Grace
was born and grew up in Highland Park, and was a graduate of
both St. James Grade School and Malincrodt High School.
After school she took a job as the elevator girl at Lyttons in
Evanston. Here she met her future husband, Larry, who was
the store manager and seventeen years her senior They
married in 1946 and moved to Glenview. They were blessed
with two children, Larry and Lynn. Grace’s daughter
remembers that while Grace was strict and protective of them,
she allowed them their own freedom, took them everywhere
and always ensured that they had what they needed. The
children grew up in Glenview, but summered in Delevan, at
the family’s lake house.
Grace loved to dance, and she and Larry attended all
the dances at the Elks Club, enjoyed dancing together
whenever possible. She was an excellent cook, a meticulous
housekeeper, and very gregarious, enjoying talking with her
friends whenever possible. Classically beautiful, Grace was
fastidious in her appearance, make-up and beautiful clothes.
She was a gifted seamstress who could create without a pattern
and even made all her daughter’s maternity clothes. She liked
to walk and stayed trim by speed-walking 2.5 miles each day.
In 1976, when he was only 50, Larry died. Grace sold
their Glenview home and moved permanently to their Lake
Delevan home. Here, she entertained her grandchildren and
remained close tot hem even if she could not join them in the
lake, for she never learned to swim. Twelve years ago, she sold
the lake home and moved permanently to Scottsdale, Arizona,
to be nearer to her sister.
Throughout her life she remained devoted to her
Catholic faith. She loved her Church and attended Mass,
making it always a priority.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Larry.
She leaves behind her daughter Lynn (John) Traff, of Buffalo
Grove, son Larry (Rose) Garlasco of Libertyville, and
grandchildren Jennifer (Ryan) Espel-Traff of Flossmoor,
Lindsay Traff of Lake Zurich and Scott Garlasco of Chicago.
