FATHER NAM’S HOMILY
2 nd SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Advent Season is a time of waiting, of expectation, of silence. Waiting for
our Lord; Jesus Christ is coming soon. Jesus will come, not only on
Christmas Day, He visits us everyday of our life.
In silence we prepare our souls for the coming of Christ. One way to
prepare for the coming of Christ in this Advent season is “repentance”.
In today’s gospel Luke tells us that, “John went throughout the whole
region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the
forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the Book of Isaiah, the prophet; “A
voice of one crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight His paths.
Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made straight, and the rough
ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”
When Jesus begins His public ministry, what is His first word of instruction to the people? It is
the word repentance. All through his ministry he continues this. The parable of the prodigal
Son, for example, revolves around the repentance of the younger brother and the refusal to repent
of the older brother. God’s grace is available to both of them, but the repentance makes the
difference. In that way we find the deep meaning of the story.
All of the prophets are inviting us to turn away from our normal way of preparing to welcome
Jesus. John the Baptist cries out to us even today to prepare the way of the Lord, make a path
straight for Him, if we want to see the salvation of our Lord. To decorate our home, to buy gifts
for Christmas is good, but let us also prepare our heart to welcome Christ. If we are not ready to
prepare our heart to welcome Christ, then we have lost what is essential.
The Lord helps us to prepare the way for Jesus, make straight His paths. Living in Chicago, all of
us have experience with winter and snow. When snow falls, we cannot see the road. If we don’t
clean the road, it is very hard to drive and easy to have an accident. The road is very important, it
takes us to our destination safely. Much more important is our spiritual road. If we don’t prepare
it well, make the road straight, we cannot go to God.
At the beginning of Advent we can make this beginning step with examination of our souls. We
examine our lack of charity, criticism of superiors, of our neighbors, and of our brothers and
sisters. We repent about our impatience, lack of self-control and mortification toward self, and of
love toward others. We prepare a way of mercy, a way of faithfulness, a way of justice, and a way
of peace.
In silence we examine our souls; we repent our sins. We prepare ourselves. We don’t blame
others, but we pray to God, “Lord, have mercy on me, we are sinners.” Amen.
IN MEMORIAM
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church for Bart Moran on December 5.
Bart was born in Highland Park and was a graduate of both St. James Grade School and Highland Park High
School. He attended the College of Lake County and I.I.T. where he studied fire science. Bart served during
the Korean War and, while fighting north of the 38 th Parallel, was severely injured and spent nine months in
hospitals before being able to return home in 1952. In 1954 he began seriously dating Pat Leverick. They
grew up together and dated a bit in high school when Pat was the best center on his sandlot football team
and in 1955 they married. In June of ’53 Bart joined the Highland Park Fire Department, was elevated to
lieutenant May 1, 1958, captain December 13, 1965, assistant chief, February 17, 1969 and commissioned
chief September 28, 1973. He held this position until re retired in 1987. Over the years he was responsible
for new fire department innovations and was a dedicated and capable fire chief. Still he never took himself
over seriously and with his family and in his own inimitable fashion, he kept his sense of humor and shared
amusing fire stories with them, never making himself the center of attention.
His two sons, Brien and Eddie, shared that he was a wonderful dad who was always there for them, coached
their hockey teams, and was a part of everything they were involved in. He did warn them, however, not to
bother to call him if they got themselves in trouble in town. This, of course, kept them out of trouble, even
though, on a few occasions, he rescued a few of their friends.
Bart enjoyed restoring old fire house memorabilia and rescued an old antique fire cart with friends. He loved
to work in his garden and cut the grass, play golf with Pat, meet his buddies for coffee and travel with his
family. They made trips to the Black Hills, Expo ’67 and Florida many times. For their 50 th anniversary, they
attended the Paddle Wheelers Boat races and then boarded one for a week’s cruise from New Orleans to
Vicksburg and back.
Bart was an I.C. volunteer for many years. He ran a room for Mardi Gras called the Fire House, was an usher
for 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturdays and Mass recently, and for as long as his health permitted, headed up the
men who serve at all our funeral Masses.
Bart was somewhat reserved but when you got to know him, he frequently blessed you with his wonderful
Irish wit. He was in turn with life, grounded in and by his faith and a loving husband. Pat shared that over
all their years they had fun together and that he was not only her husband and lover, but also her best friend.
Bart enjoyed life and his many friends, but his God and family were always first in his life.
He leaves his wife Pat, son Brien (Sheila) and Eddie (Stacey,), grandchildren Caitlyn, Morgan, Bailey and
Liam, sister Catherine Murray and brother George (Lottie).
THE YEAR OF FAITH
SHARING THE LOVE OF OUR FAITH
This is the twelfth in the series of articles written by members of our Immaculate Conception family, describing what
the Mass and the Eucharist means to them. This week, Parishioner Nancy Pasquesi shares her thoughts…
My faith journey at Immaculate Conception Parish began when our family moved to Highland Park and to
“IC” from Holy Rosary in Chicago. Here, we met Doctor O’Neill. As difficult as “Doc” was, his devotion
to the Blessed Sacrament was always evident. I was blest to have parents whose faith was firm and “Doc’s”
idiosyncrasies were dismissed by them because he was “a man of God.”
The good sisters of Laretto, quietly and with great devotion, instilled in us the true meaning of God’s love.
My sister, Louise McCarthy, continues that tradition - preparing the altar for Holy Mass every morning.
We remember, daily, our sister Norma Morgan, brother Pellegrino (Pal), who have left us and gone to be
with God, and brother Marco who lives in Louisiana.
Our parish family is without a doubt “our family” and we thank God for His many blessings.
FAITH IN ACTION
South East Lake County Faith in Action Volunteers
Because it is important to keep our parishioners informed about volunteer opportunities within our
community, we would like to introduce Faith in Action. It is “a non-sectarian organization whose mission
is to help older adults maintain their independence and improve their quality of life.”
Trained and supervised volunteers help with the every-day tasks of independent living such as
transportation, grocery shopping and social support. People who would like help are matched with a
regular volunteer who can provide just a few hours of support every week. Each volunteer controls the
level of commitment they can make and the organization takes responsibility for finding a substitute if
the regular volunteer needs the week off. They also carry liability insurance for the volunteers’ protection.
Currently from Immaculate Conception we have one volunteer and one recipient of services. Our
volunteer drives a recipient to her medical appointment each week and our recipient receives help with
her grocery shopping. The following is a quote from her: “Last year about this time, vision problems from
glaucoma ended my driving career. As you can imagine, it was a life-changing event. Fortunately for me, I
already had heard of Faith in Action and the wonderful help they provide through a well-organized system
of gracious and generous volunteers. It has truly been a God-send to me that a gracious, cheerful
volunteer has assisted me weekly with grocery shopping and errands. The assist from Faith in Action is a
true gift, making me feel that my life is becoming more normalized. I couldn’t be more grateful.”
This organization has the full support of our local churches and congregations and they are the source of
most of the volunteers. Faith in Action serves Highland Park, Highwood, Deerfield, Riverwoods, Lake
Forest and Lake Bluff. If you would like to become a volunteer or recipient or need more information,
In this Special Year of Faith declared by Pope
Benedict, our PREP Students will lead us in Prayer,
Christ. Our Holy Father, the Pope, has encouraged
us to consider the events in the life of Christ as way
to deepen our own faith.
Our students have been encouraged to learn more
about Jesus Christ. By this annual Christmas
celebration they will share with all of us the
wonderful story of his birth.
