practiced everything we learned that
day. Early in the morning, you could
hear the click, click, click of those
heading down to the hall for the first
dance.
I was introduced to mixers, fun
things, silly things, and I felt like I had
been born in the south where they did
these things in the movies. It was my
first impression and a lasting one and
I’ll never forget it. I hope to make the
Fontana trip this year for the second
time to come to the new Fontana
Jamboree. Since this time I’ve
attended many of the National
Conventions, gotten to personally
know many of the National
Instructors, and I myself have been
teaching clogging for about 10 years.
I began clogging at 52 years of age
(we are the oldest, and the first
clogging club in Wisconsin) and I have
been dancing for 22 years.
The question asked in your
newsletter was: What has happened
to our conventions? (May 2005
issue - What Happened to the
Clogging Convention by Greg
Dionne, FL). Our Jamboree is held
every year in May, and we have 2
national instructors, some state
instructors, and we have a ball.
Attendees come from Minnesota,
Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and the
national instructors always make this
so much fun, and they may do mixers
or whatever at the fun dances and
everyone joins in. Our members have
become younger, they like different
music (pop) and like to compete
more. Our initial group was so much
more spontaneous and loving anything
thrown at us, whereas to mention
doing a mixer, hand movements,
interaction in line dances or
formations, a lot of the dancers will
opt not to do it. I love traditional
clogging, will dance to pop, Latin, rap
and Irish, but still prefer country and
bluegrass. As long as I can attend
some workshops around the country,
I am a happy camper.
Don’t ever quit doing what you do
at workshops - the interaction
between instructors benefits the
dancers, the mixers give us something
to laugh about, and dancing songs
we’ve learned during the day gives us
a chance to decide if we want to take
it back to our club or not. Acapella
demonstrations by the national
instructors are such a thrill, I believe
you even did a mock wedding skit at
one of our past Jamborees, and all of
the entertaining things you do, those
of us up north at least, still appreciate
it.
Norma:
Thanks for a wonderful letter.
We have been a part of this
clogging family a long time haven’t
we. I hope those who are new to
the activity get to experience the
same wonder and joy that we have
as we have during our years in
clogging!
I have been involved in square
many years until November of this
year.
At 89, it is time to end my teaching
career!
I have enjoyed being in your classes
at the many workshop I have
attended. I always managed to get in
the front line! I have also always
enjoyed reading the Double Toe
Times.
Gene Dentino
Gene:
You are a national treasure, my
dear! I remember seeing you on
the floor at the first Fontana
Workshop I ever attended and I
was amazed at this little bundle of
energy right on the front row that
could kick over her head and had a
light and nimble step that just
spoke worlds about the performer
in you! For the next 20 years, I
have never ceased to be amazed at
your style and grace and your
unstoppable spirit!
Enjoy your retirement and please
stop by a workshop when you can
to say Hi to us all!
I would also like to say a word of
thank to all of the cloggers through
the years who have help drive
Gene to workshops. Not
everyone is able to drive those long
distances and it is great to have
friends to bring you to the dance.
You are a real testament to the
family of clogging.
Best wishes to you Gene!
