Fourth Int’l Chestnut Symposium<br />
Climate Fruits<br />
Participants of the Symposium.<br />
The IV International Chestnut Symposium<br />
was held in Miyun, Beijing from 25-28<br />
September, 2008. It was organized by Beijing<br />
University of Agriculture, Miyun People’s<br />
Government of Beijing and Miyun Rural Affair<br />
Committee under the auspices of the<br />
International Society for Horticultural Science.<br />
At the opening ceremony Prof. Qin Ling,<br />
Symposium Convener, expressed a cordial welcome<br />
to all participants. She was followed by<br />
Prof. Giancarlo Bounous, Chair of the ISHS<br />
Working Group on Chestnuts, and Prof.<br />
Damiano Avanzato, Chair of the ISHS Section<br />
Nuts and Mediterranean Climate Fruits. Prof.<br />
Qin was awarded the ISHS Medal in recognition<br />
of her service to the Society as Convener of this<br />
International Symposium.<br />
The participation was impressive. Present were<br />
200 participants from 15 countries including<br />
China, USA, Italy, Turkey, Romania, Portugal,<br />
New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Hungary, Slovakia,<br />
Czech Republic and so on.<br />
There were about 40 oral presentations and<br />
150 posters on a wide range of topics relating<br />
to chestnut were presented. The symposium<br />
mainly consisted of the following five sessions:<br />
1. Chestnut Growing, Economy, Marketing,<br />
Harvest and Fruit Processing<br />
2. Biology, Physiology and Ecology<br />
3. Genetics, Breeding, Biotechnology and Plant<br />
Development<br />
4. Plant Protection<br />
5. Orchard and Forest Management<br />
In the first thematic area, Chestnut Growing,<br />
Economy, Marketing, Harvest and Fruit<br />
Processing, the emphasis was laid on the chestnut<br />
tree as a major resource. Prof. Damiano<br />
Avanzato gave an overview on the International<br />
Society for Horticulture Science and on the<br />
chestnut industry in the EU and former communist<br />
European countries. Mr. Wang Tie-ming,<br />
Director of Beijing Miyun Forest Breuer, introduced<br />
the development situation of chestnut in<br />
theory and in practice in Miyun District in<br />
Beijing.<br />
The thematic area Biology, Physiology and<br />
Ecology was opened by an interesting keynote<br />
lecture presented by Prof. Zheng Cheng-le on<br />
the “Study of variation of mineral elements<br />
content in chestnut stands”. Also, cryopreservation,<br />
propagation and micro-propagation of<br />
chestnut were reported in this session.<br />
The session Genetics, Breeding, Biotechnology<br />
and Plant Development started with the topic<br />
“Chromosomal location of ribosomal genes in<br />
Chinese and American chestnut”, presented by<br />
Prof. Nurul Islam-Faridi. Prof. Fenny Dane from<br />
Auburn University presented the comparative<br />
phylogeography of Castanea species.<br />
For the session Plant Protection there were 12<br />
presentations on the diseases and protection of<br />
chestnuts and one poster with the dispersion of<br />
Cryphonectria parasitica in chestnuts of different<br />
progenies. Some of them reported on the<br />
chestnut diseases using aerial photography and<br />
geostatistical methods, some were about the<br />
main species of diseases on chestnuts.<br />
