About Choreographer Yuri Possokhov B orn in Lugansk, Ukraine, Yuri Possokhov received his dance training at the Moscow Ballet School. Upon graduating, Possokhov danced with the Bolshoi Ballet for ten years, working under the direction of Yuri Grigorivich. In 1992, he joined the Royal Danish Ballet at the invitation of Ballet Master Frank Andersen. The following December, Possokhov was cast as Prince Desire in Helgi Tomasson’s The Sleeping Beauty and upon an invitation to dance at San Francisco Ballet’s opening night gala, he moved west, joining San Francisco Ballet in 1994 as a principal dancer. In 1999, Possokhov organized and performed in a Russian tour entitled “Ballet Beyond Borders.” Sixteen dancers from San Francisco Ballet performed in the tour which traveled to more than ten cities throughout Russia. As a choreographer, Possokhov’s credits include Songs of Spain, choreographed in 1997 for San Francisco Ballet Principal Dancer Muriel Maffre, for whom he also created Ballet Mori in 2006. Also in 1997, he created A Duet for Two for former San Francisco Ballet Principal Dancer Joanna Berman and Impromptu Scriabin for Soloist Felipe Diaz, who performed the work for the 1997 Jackson International Ballet Competition. In 2000, Possokhov completed a new work for a dancer at the Maryinsky (Kirov) Ballet, as well as 5 Mazurkas for the Marin Dance Theatre. Possokhov’s Magrittomania, a work inspired by the paintings of Rene Magritte, was commissioned for San Francisco Ballet’s Discovery Program in 2000 and in April 2001, Possokhov received an Isadora Duncan Award for outstanding choreography. For the 2002 Repertory Season, Possokhov created a work entitled Damned, based on the Euripides play, Medea. The Company took this ballet on tour to New York’s City Center in the Fall of 2002. For the 2003 Repertory Season, Possokhov collaborated with Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson on a new staging of the full-length Don Quixote, which was also performed on the Company’s tour to Los Angeles in the fall of 2003. The next year, his Firebird debuted at the Oregon Ballet Theatre’s White Nights Festival. Possokhov’s Study in Motion, set to the music of Alexander Scriabin, premiered during the company’s 2004 Repertory Season, and was also performed on the Company’s tour to London in 2004 and during the 2005 Repertory Season. In that same season, San Francisco Ballet also premiered his Reflections. In February 2006, Possokhov staged a full-length Cinderella for the Bolshoi Ballet, who toured the work to London that summer.
