Preface<br />

This document is a product <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a cooperative agreement between The Nature C<strong>on</strong>servancy<br />

(TNC), U.S. Fish <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Wildlife Service, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the New York State Council <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Trout<br />

Unlimited. The goal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the cooperative agreement was to produce a report c<strong>on</strong>taining a<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>literature</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>review</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> synthesis <strong>on</strong> the ecology <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> invasive knotweed. The<br />

report was meant to:<br />

“…inform natural resource managers <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> policy makers, municipalities, c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>org</strong>anizati<strong>on</strong>s, transportati<strong>on</strong> specialists, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> private l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>owners <strong>on</strong> the existing <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

potential threat <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the spread <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this plant to stream corridor areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> to improve<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trol efforts throughout the Lake Champlain watershed <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other impacted areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the northeast <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> mid-west U. S”.<br />

In summary, a substantial amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> knotweed management exists, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

several comprehensive summaries with at similar goals have been developed, <strong>on</strong> the<br />

invasive ecology <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> knotweed in the US. Two recently completed reports<br />

cover most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the ground that this report was originally to focus <strong>on</strong>.<br />

The report written by Erin Talmage <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Erik Kiviat <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Huds<strong>on</strong>ia Ltd., Japanese<br />

Knotweed <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Water Quality <strong>on</strong> the Batavia Kill in Greene County, New York:<br />

Background Informati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Literature Review, provides a well-referenced <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> detailed<br />

descripti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the origin, growth habit, invasive history, potential ecological impacts, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

management <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Japanese knotweed.<br />

Another report written by J<strong>on</strong>ath<strong>on</strong> Soll <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the TNC Oreg<strong>on</strong> Field Office, C<strong>on</strong>trolling<br />

Knotweed (Polyg<strong>on</strong>um cuspidatum, P. sachalinense, P. polystachyum <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> hybrids) in the<br />

Pacific Northwest, briefly describes the three species <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> their basic ecology, but then<br />

provides a detailed descripti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> tested c<strong>on</strong>trol methods <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> provides recommendati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Best Management Practices. The report is based <strong>on</strong> the experience gained from three<br />

years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> active knotweed c<strong>on</strong>trol effort <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> had the most complete <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> up-to-date<br />

descripti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> methodology.<br />

Together, these documents provide a wealth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> knotweed invasive<br />

ecology <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol. To avoid duplicative effort in the writing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this report, little effort<br />

was spent <strong>on</strong> researching to describe the invasive ecology <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> knotweed, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>literature</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

search was restricted to the period between 2004 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the present. Relevant new <str<strong>on</strong>g>literature</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

is <str<strong>on</strong>g>review</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed in the secti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this report it applies to. As for informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

methods, the report from Oreg<strong>on</strong> TNC report forms the base <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this report <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> new<br />

relevant informati<strong>on</strong> is provided at the end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each secti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Informati<strong>on</strong> summarized in this report comes from numerous different sources.<br />

Informati<strong>on</strong> was collected from grey <str<strong>on</strong>g>literature</str<strong>on</strong>g>, such as annual management reports,<br />

methodology recommendati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> websites, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> ph<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> email corresp<strong>on</strong>dence with<br />

practiti<strong>on</strong>ers. A substantial amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> management was <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten<br />

not systematically collected or recorded, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> thus comes from recollected pers<strong>on</strong>al<br />
