Shipley Lates is back and better than ever!
Get Crafting // 27 August from 6 –10pm
Shipley Lates, sponsored by Ikea, offer an exciting after hours experience at the
North East’s leading gallery of design and contemporary craft. On the last Friday
of the month join us at the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead for a series of free
themed events aimed at kick-starting your weekend with a fix of culture.
Each evening will include artist talks, creative activities, exhibitions and there’s even
a bar! There’s no need to worry about how to get here or get home - a free bus service
will be running once an hour to help you really unwind and have fun.
Whether you come to Shipley Lates pre-club, post-dinner or for the whole evening,
you’ll find something to inspire and excite you.

There will be a free open top bus service running hourly from Newcastle city centre,
through Gateshead and on to the Shipley, allowing you to start and end your evening
in style.

Craftivism: Objects to Change the
World we are championing the
handmade during this evening
of warps and wefts, knitting
and stitching. Crafters and
non-crafters welcome!
The Knitting Salon
Artist-curator Trevor Pitt will be
exhibiting The Knitting Salon, bringing
together for the first time eight
benches knitted across the UK. The
Salon will be a platform for sharing
knitting skills, discussion and debate.
Trevor describes his practice as socially
engaged and The Knitting Salon
is an example of this, having been
collaboratively knitted with locally
sourced wool.

For one night only Rachael Matthews
and Louise Harries, founders of the
haberdashery Prick Your Finger and
active promoters of knitting and crafting,
will be available for bespoke talks to
inspire your creativity.

Family Feast Barnaby Barford
Statement Jewellery
This evening we celebrate the
Shipley’s recently purchased ceramic
work by Barnaby Barford and a new
ceramic commission for the Gallery
from Paul Scott. Both artists subvert
traditional approaches to everyday
ceramics, producing contemporary,
quirky and spectacular results.
Barnaby Barford sources traditional
mass-produced or antique figurines and
re-uses them, creating amusing, sinister
and satirical sculptures reflecting
society today. He will discuss his work
and show his film Damaged Goods.
Paul Scott is known internationally
for ceramics that combine traditional
prints with subversive statements. He
is currently working on a commission
for the Shipley exploring the
regeneration of Gateshead. He will
talk about this project and the stories
he has discovered along the way.
Damaged Goods
Drawing inspiration from Barford, make
your own satirical tableaux of modern
life. Feel free to bring materials!
Raku inspired the celebrated potter
Bernard Leach to make ceramics for
the first time when he encountered the
process in Japan in 1911.
Let it inspire you too by creating your
own raku pot in our outdoor kiln.
Explore 20th century studio ceramics in
the Henry Rothschild Study Centre.
Our Ceramics Tombola and DJ Set
complete this perfectly formed evening.

is taking part with an evening
celebrating the language of fashion.

Craftivism: Objects to Change the World
10 July - 7 November 2010
Craft is back and this time it’s political. Craftivism (craft + activism) explores
craft as a force for change and as part of a radical tradition stretching back
to William Morris and beyond. This brand new exhibition also includes
work by contemporary craftspeople, such as Grayson Perry, who challenge
the way we live, and invites you to DIY and learn craft-based skills.

Christmas Present is the Shipley Art Gallery’s annual selling craft
exhibition, which this year features handmade objects by makers
from the North East including glass, ceramics and textiles.

paintings of Gateshead, Tyne & Wear and Northumberland.
Treasures from the Shipley Art Gallery

The Shipley's superb painting collection includes works from the 16th to the
20th centuries and features landscapes, seascapes, portraits and religious
subjects. This exhibition includes old favourites and some rarely seen
treasures, and focuses on Joseph Shipley, the man and the collector.
