MOE reports on Clean Harbors progress
Representatives from the Ministry of the Environment attended
council on March 18 to report on progress being made at the Clean
Harbors facility. MOE representative Mike Moroney said an MOE
inspector is on-site almost every day and a second inspector is on duty
after hours. The facility is currently undergoing a rigorous environmental
assessment to address issues that have previously caused serious
problems for residents who live in the area. Mr. Moroney pointed out
work being done by the company has brought about a marked reduction
in odor complaints.
Mayor Arnold acknowledged the positive changes that have been
effected by improvements made at the facility, but stressed there must
continue to be a constant MOE presence there to ensure that the improvements
will continue. He noted that there must be tangible proof
available to answer inquiries and questions residents may have.
NOVA reports on Project 2020
Representatives from NOVA Chemical and consulting engineering
firm, Stantec, attended council on March 4 to report on a new project
slated for the Corunna site. The project, known as Project 2020, will
see the completion of the Genesis pipeline later this year. This line will
bring shale gas from the United States into the facility to be used in
NOVA’s manufacturing process.
NOVA is also considering a second phase to the project. This
would involve the construction of a new processing facility at an estimated
cost of $1.5 billion. This phase of the project must receive the
approval of the NOVA board by the third quarter of 2014 before it can
continue and, if approved, it is estimated that construction would begin
in the fourth quarter of 2017 with completion slated for 2018. NOVA
