How does the <strong>University</strong> define<br />

a conflict <strong>of</strong> interest?<br />

A conflict <strong>of</strong> interest can occur when a <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Calgary</strong> employee, through a relationship with<br />

an outside organization, is in a position to:<br />

1) influence the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Calgary</strong>’s business,<br />

research or other areas that may lead to direct<br />

or indirect financial gain,<br />

2) adversely impact or influence one’s research<br />

or teaching responsibilities, or<br />

3) provide improper advantage to others, to the<br />

disadvantage <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Calgary</strong>.<br />

Actual and potential conflicts should be disclosed<br />

with your supervisor.<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Calgary</strong> and a licensee company,<br />

and conflict <strong>of</strong> commitment (e.g., your ability to<br />

meet your <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Calgary</strong> obligations).<br />

What are examples <strong>of</strong> a conflict<br />

<strong>of</strong> commitment?<br />

A conflict <strong>of</strong> commitment may exist if duties,<br />

assignments or responsibilities associated with<br />

a technology license or outside business arrangement<br />

have a negative impact on your ability to meet<br />

commitments associated with your <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Calgary</strong> employment or exceed the amount <strong>of</strong> time<br />

available to you for these activities. To avoid a<br />

conflict <strong>of</strong> commitment, fully disclose your situation<br />

to your supervisor.<br />
