1. General overview of <strong>Nigeria</strong><br />
<strong>Nigeria</strong> is located in West Africa on the Gulf of Guinea between the Republic<br />
of Benin and Cameroon. It shares its land borders with Cameroon in the east,<br />
Niger in the north, Republic of Benin in the west, and Chad in the northeast,<br />
and its coast in the south lies on the Gulf of Guinea on the Atlantic Ocean.<br />
The country became an independent State on 1st October, 1960, having being<br />
colonized by Britain in 1861. It is a multi-lingual society with over 250 languages.<br />
The 3 major languages spoken in <strong>Nigeria</strong> are Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba, while<br />
the official language is English. The main religions are Christianity, Islam, and<br />
indigenous beliefs. The latest data published by the National Bureau of Statistics<br />
in 2011 on the national population of the country puts the total population of<br />
<strong>Nigeria</strong> at 164 million. The largest population concentration is in Lagos which<br />
is also where most of the economic and industrial activity takes place in. Other<br />
major cities and industrial centres include Port Harcourt, Onitsha, Kano, and<br />
Aba. The federal capital territory of <strong>Nigeria</strong> is located in Abuja.<br />
