Nashville-based Bridgestone
Americas Tire Operations,
LLC (BATO), is a subsidiary of
Bridgestone Americas, Inc., whose
parent company, Bridgestone
Corporation, is the world’s largest
tire and rubber company. BATO
traces its roots to The Firestone
Tire & Rubber Company, which
was founded in August 1900. That
was when 31-year-old Harvey S.
Firestone (1868-1938) began tire
production with 12 employees in
Akron, Ohio, while marketing solid
rubber tires for carriage wheels.
On the other side of the globe, in
1931, Shojiro Ishibashi (1885-1976)
created Bridgestone Tire Company
Ltd. (later renamed Bridgestone
Corporation). He fashioned the
company name by reversing the
English translation of his own
surname: “Ishibashi” literally
means “stone bridge” in Japanese.
Bridgestone quickly expanded and
diversified into sporting goods and
other rubber products including
motorcycle tires. Bridgestone
purchased Firestone in 1988 for
$2.6 billion. Combined with its new subsidiary, Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. (BFS), Bridgestone Corporation confirmed its leadership position in the
global tire market.
In MotoGP, Bridgestone became the exclusive tire supplier to all participating teams beginning in 2009. In just ten years of competition at the
pinnacle of motorcycle road racing, Bridgestone riders have scored many victories and podium finishes, including MotoGP World Championships
from 2007 - 2012. The technology developed and tested for racing tires makes for higher-performing and longer-lasting consumer tires.
In AMA supercross and motocross, Bridgestone enjoyed many successful seasons as the exclusive tire supplier to the factory Suzuki, Kawasaki
and Yamaha teams, plus the Pro-circuit/Kawasaki team, L & M Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing. Bridgestone dominance was unequaled in off-road
competition in 2009. That year, Bridgestone riders captured four of the five AMA National supercross and motocross championships.
