Chief Executive’s Update
By Julian Hartley
UHSM’s Objectives for 2010/11
are now agreed. Our objectives
define what we expect to achieve
over the forthcoming period and
the corporate objectives set by
the Board feed into the objectives
which our departments and then
individuals will achieve.
We have set ten priority areas
next year - based on guidance
from the Department of Health and
discussions with our local partners.
They are;
1. Enhancing patient safety
through our continued programme
of tackling infection prevention
2. Improving the quality of
our services by measuring how
successful we are at preventing
errors and improving the patient
experience by ensuring we act
swiftly on patient feedback and
complaints
3. Engaging with our staff
to improve communication,
recognition and leadership -
developing The South Manchester
Way
4. Ensuring we deliver the 18
weeks from referral to treatment
standard, Emergency Access and
Cancer Waiting Time Standards
5. Ensure we operate within our
financial resources and reduce
waste and inefficiency
Mr Ben Bridgewater
6. Continue to invest in our
buildings and grounds so that our
environment helps our patients’
recovery
7. Work with our partners in
primary and community care and in
Local Authorities to streamline the
patient journey
8. Ensure we develop effective
leadership at all levels in the
organisation
9. Develop our UHSM Education
Academy to deliver innovative
education
10. Continue to support world class
research and development with
our partners in other Manchester
hospitals.
The challenges associated with
reducing expenditure whilst at
the same time delivering ever
increasing levels of safety, quality
and outstanding patient experience
have been brought into sharp focus
for the whole of the NHS by the
events at Mid Staffordshire. This is
why it is right that we put safety,
quality and patient experience
right at the top of our corporate
objectives. However we have also
seen that organisational culture
is also intrinsically important to
the delivery of outstanding care
and so the further development
of The South Manchester Way is
BMJ Award for Cardiac surgeon and team
also of crucial importance. I have
already talked about the need to
ensure our clinicians and clinical
leaders are empowered to take
on greater levels of accountability
for performance and resource
management. Evidence suggests
that strong clinical leadership,
accompanied by deep and real
employee engagement, does
deliver strong operational, clinical
and quality performance. We will
be reviewing whether we can do
more to empower our clinicians to
make and deliver key strategic and
operational priorities – supported by
strong general management.
Other opportunities for us
include the potential for us
to develop closer clinical and
management arrangements with
community and primary care
services in the south sector and we
have had some early discussions
with NHS Manchester about this. We
will continue the development of
our UHSM Academy and research at
UHSM.
In short 2010/11 will be a
challenging year for us all. However,
we have worked well as One
Talented Team and I am grateful for
the effort, dedication and support
of all our staff. I am confident that
we can continue and build on this in
2010/11.
Congratulations go to UHSM’s cardiac surgeon Mr Ben Bridgewater and his team
who scooped a prestigious BMJ Award on 10 March. The awards set out to recognise
individuals and organisations that have demonstrated outstanding and measurable
contributions to healthcare.
The Quality Improvement Award was presented to the Society for Cardiothoracic
Surgery for its work in collecting and publishing detailed accurate data on outcomes.
Ben was the author of the 450-page report ‘Demonstrating Quality: The Sixth
National Adult Cardiac Surgical Database Report’ which was a comprehensive study
of over 400,000 cardiac operations and provided a full analysis of the strengths and
weaknesses of cardiac surgery in the UK. The public reporting of cardiac outcomes
is widely regarded as having empowered surgeons to take on more complicated and
high-risk cases and improved the performance of cardiac surgeons nationally.
Students get a taste
of hospital life
Over two days in February, UHSM’s
Undergraduate Department ran a ‘Hospital
Experience Weekend’ for local school
children to give them a taste of working in
a busy hospital.
The local ‘wannabe’ future clinicians
listened to presentations by professionals
including a surgeon, GP, medical
nurse, physiotherapist and radiologist,
introducing their discipline and describing
how and why they chose their profession.
The students then changed into hospital
scrubs to try out different aspects of life
as a medical student including plastering
a limb, scrubbing up, training on basic life
support and basic anatomy.
They were given the chance to quiz a
group of medical students about student
life, the application process, the course
and The University of Manchester as well
as being given a tour around our A&E
Department.
The students, from local schools including
Blessed Thomas Holford Catholic School,
Kingsway High School, Manchester Health
Academy, Parrs Wood High School and
Chorlton High School, were all given
certificates of attendance.
UHSM midwife Cathy London ‘on set’ with Coronation Street
actress Julie Hesmondhalgh
UHSM Midwife Calls
at the Rovers Return
More used to delivering lines than delivering babies, Coronation
Street actor Julie Hesmondhalgh met UHSM midwife Cathy
London at the Rovers Return to raise awareness of the telephone
service Direct to Midwife.
By calling 0800 121 4400, pregnant women can choose to speak
to a midwife as soon as they know they are pregnant instead of
their GP, often gaining access to antenatal care more quickly.
Julie was well looked after by midwives whilst pregnant with her
daughter Martha, now 8.
She said: “I strongly believe in midwife-led antenatal care. My
experience was fantastic when I was pregnant with Martha. They
offered me reassurance and advice when I needed it the most.”
“The Direct to Midwife telephone number is a great idea, because
it offers mums-to-be a simpler way of accessing the care they
need. It is safe for a woman to speak to a midwife as soon as she
knows she is pregnant and it is better to do it sooner rather than
later.”
Cathy, who looks after mums-to-be throughout South
Manchester and Trafford, visited the famous cobbles to hand over
a set of posters and a special teddy bear for display around the
Corrie studios.
The soap has become famous in recent years for the high number
of cast members becoming mums and dads.
