COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

<strong>The</strong> course provides a multidisciplinary review and update on the diagnosis and management<br />

<strong>of</strong> patients with breast carcinoma. <strong>The</strong> presentations will focus on recent diagnostic and<br />

therapeutic advances, and emphasize their practical implications. Some <strong>of</strong> the lectures will<br />

include discussion <strong>of</strong> the results <strong>of</strong> experimental studies to highlight recent progress in the<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> breast carcinoma and future directions for its treatment.<br />

<strong>The</strong> course faculty consists <strong>of</strong> a cadre <strong>of</strong> experts in the diagnosis and treatment <strong>of</strong> breast<br />

carcinoma from European centers and from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in<br />

the United States <strong>of</strong> America.<br />

Target Audience<br />

<strong>The</strong> course is intended for physicians and nursing staff involved in the care <strong>of</strong> patients with<br />

breast carcinoma, who wish to broaden their knowledge <strong>of</strong> the disease.<br />

Educational Objectives<br />

Upon completing this course, participants will:<br />

- understand benefits and limitations <strong>of</strong> the latest techniques for the radiologic detection <strong>of</strong><br />

breast carcinoma;<br />

- understand the principles underlying classification and staging <strong>of</strong> breast carcinoma and<br />

their implications for patient care;<br />

- understand the benefits and limitations <strong>of</strong> sentinel lymph node biopsy in the management<br />

<strong>of</strong> patients with breast carcinoma;<br />

- familiarize themselves with the latest concepts and options for diagnosis and treatment <strong>of</strong><br />

patients with breast carcinoma;<br />

- understand the clinical relevance <strong>of</strong> recent advances in the basic research <strong>of</strong> breast cancer.<br />

This activity has been planned and implemented jointly by the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Insubria</strong> and<br />
