OHIO, TENNESSEE & CUMBERLAND THEMED VOYAGES FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION Enjoy Pittsburgh as the city buzzes with Independence Day festivities. Brass bands and red, white and blue bunting are the order of the day on this special voyage. Spark the child inside as you watch fireworks reflect off the steel and glass towers of glittering downtown Pittsburgh. Tip your hat to America’s Founding Fathers as we celebrate the birth of the United States and its enduring freedoms that guide us more than two centuries later. (see page 37 for itinerary) COUNTRY MUSIC CRUISE America has given rise to many forms of music but few are recognized as being more quintessentially homegrown than country music. The melodies of Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton have shaped generations of new artists ranging from Garth Brooks to Carrie Underwood. (see page 39 for itinerary) BOURBON & BLUEGRASS Experience the history of Bourbon and Bluegrass, both distinctly American icons. This voyage on the Ohio River takes you through the heart of Bourbon country and the home of modern Bluegrass music. Ninety-five percent of all Bourbon is made, start to finish, in this region, and we’ll show you how with special presentations and tours to a hand-picked sampling of the finest distilleries along the Bourbon Trail. You will also enjoy the dynamic sounds of Bluegrass. With roots in the Old World and Appalachia, Bluegrass has gained popularity as a style of country music that continually progresses while honoring tradition. Explore the history and heritage of Bluegrass music and Bourbon on this remarkable voyage. (see page 31 and 38 for itinerary) RIVERBOAT RALLY There was a time when the rivers were alive with paddlewheels, tall stacks and colorful characters and during this celebration of the classic riverboat Belle of Louisville’s 100th birthday, history repeats itself. An impressive fleet of riverboats, including our own American Queen, which is the largest of all, will descend upon graceful Louisville and sister city Jeffersonville for events on the river and festivals ashore in honor of the “oldest operating Mississippi-style steamboat in the world.” (see page 39 for itinerary) 40
civil war A NATION AT WAR WITH ITSELF Delve into the strategies, military and political, that shaped the events of the American Civil War. Period characters will bring key historical figures to life. Visit the bloody battlefields and hallowed cemeteries of the fallen soldiers, and the ramparts that remind us of a war that changed a nation. Learn of the skirmishes that pitted brother against brother in a nation divided. It has been over 150 years since the start of a war that ravaged a young nation and produced more American casualties than any other conflict, before or since. The American Queen sails into the heart of the hallowed grounds that redefined a country. On our special 9-day voyages, May 9-17 and October 31 – November 8, 2014, you will revisit the towns and battlefields of the lower Mississippi River from New Orleans, Louisiana to Memphis, Tennessee. In Vicksburg, Mississippi, pay your respects among the thousands of headstones in Vicksburg National Cemetery, view the remains of the gunboat USS Cairo in Vicksburg National Military Park and walk on the bucolic fields that were the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Learn how the lack of opposition in the Union capture of New Orleans in 1862 lead to the preservation of so many historic buildings today and hear the legends of the naval battles fought on the river outside Memphis. Discover that Natchez, Mississippi’s extensive collection of antebellum homes is due to General Grant’s decision not to destroy the city during his occupation in 1863. While most American Queen voyages through the American South allow a glimpse of Civil War history, our October 31 – November 17, 2014 journey is dedicated exclusively to understanding and reliving the political, economic, military and cultural aspects of the War Between the States. Chattanooga, Tennessee was bombarded by Union artillery and then-occupied as part of the Chickamauga Campaign. From Savannah, Tennessee, trace the tragic story of the Battle of Shiloh, sometimes referred to as “Bloody Shiloh.” See how Decatur, Alabama was leveled so that bricks from the city’s buildings could be used to build barracks for Union soldiers. Paducah, Kentucky was spared during the war thanks to its importance as a repair center for ironclad gunboats, and its strategic location was the key to controlling access to the Tennessee River, a major supply route. Historians often note that whoever controlled the Mississippi River, the war’s most vital supply route, would win the Civil War, and the skirmishes, occupations and horrific battles that took place along its banks bear testimony to its strategic importance and the courage of the men who fought to control it and the nation’s destiny. The river winds through the heart of a country torn asunder and we invite you to join us in understanding the conflict that reshaped a nation. (See itineraries on pages 23 and 32.) 41
