Sessions Continued... 402 403 404 405 Supporting LGBTQ Families: Cultural Competencies for Doulas Presented by Joy MacTavish, MA, CD(DONA), CD(PALS), PCD(NAPS), ICCE, CHBE Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals and families are giving birth to and raising children and, therefore, doulas benefit from having cultural competency when working with these groups. This session seeks to increase the professionalism and cultural competence of doulas through background information about LGBTQ families, an overview of the challenges faced by this population, as well as specific cultural competency strategies and how to apply them when supporting LGBTQ families. The Sneetches: Models of Collaboration Presented by Barbara Hotelling, BSN, MSN, WHNP, LCCE, CD(DONA) Nurses and doulas struggle to share the hospital turf when they are working with mothers. Why? What good does it do? Learn how a nurse and a doula are currently collaborating to solve those issues at UNC Women’s Hospital in North Carolina. And it’s working! The Hero’s Journey: Using Storytelling to Empower Pregnant Mothers Presented by Karen Brody This session will describe a set of concepts drawn from Carl G. Jung and Joseph Campbell and known as “The Hero’s Journey.” Storytelling, which can grab your gut and tighten your throat, can spark pregnant mothers to take action. We will explore Sandy’s stories from the play, Birth, and discuss how Sandy’s story can empower pregnant mothers who have an unsatisfactory birth to rewrite their upcoming birth into a “hero’s journey” and how Vasalisa’s story can help pregnant mothers find their intuition. Global Models of Care Presented by Debra Pascali-Bonaro, B.Ed, LCCE, BDT/PDT(DONA) and Ana Paula Markel, CD(DONA), BDT(DONA) Join this session for a journey around the world to explore the history, principles and 10 Steps of the International MotherBaby Childbirth Initiative (IMBCI). The IMBCI is being put to work in eight demonstration projects and by numerous MotherBaby networks (MBnets). A critical component of the IMBCI is that it highlights the fact that “women’s and children’s rights are human rights” and that “access to humane and effective healthcare is a basic human right.” Be inspired to bring elements of MotherBaby care to your doula practice and community. 7:30 p.m. - Saturday Evening Social Activity Enjoy an informal evening socializing with new acquaintances, long-time friends or special family at designated areas in the resort. Sunday, July 22, 2012 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. - General Session Four (will be translated into Spanish) Natural Birth in a Hospital Presented by Cynthia Gabriel, Ph.D. As an anthropologist, Dr. Gabriel observes details closely. She has noticed small but significant differences between planned natural births that succeed and those that end in unwanted and often unnecessary interventions. In this session, she will talk about what really makes a difference at a hospital birth. 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. - General Session Five (will be translated into Spanish) The International MotherBaby Childbirth Initiative: What is an Optimal MotherBaby Model? Presented by Debra Pascali-Bonaro, B.Ed, LCCE, BDT/PDT(DONA) Explore the history, principles and 10 Steps of the International MotherBaby Childbirth Initiative (IMBCI), created by the International MotherBaby Organization (formerly the CIMS International Committee) and launched in March 2008. What is the doula’s role on the path to change?
