The Commonwealth, which accounts for 30% of the world population, has shown a stubborn refusal to address the human rights of its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) citizens. Of the 78 countries worldwide that still criminalise consensual and private adult same-sex sexual acts, over a half are Commonwealth members states. Nearly 80% of the countries making up the Commonwealth – 41 out of 53 - still maintain such laws and show few signs of accepting that the organisation’s Charter commitment to opposing ‘all forms of discrimination’ must include discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people.

Let’s hope it lasts throughout the summer and we can make full use of the outside tables and chairs which are popping up around our favourite scene venues and bars. As we enter Aug it’s also the month where Edinburgh truly shines as it plays host to the biggest arts festival in the world. Keep an eye on the ScotsGay fringe website for all the reviews. Also the second part of our top ten must see shows will be in this edition of the magazine. So let’s go to it! We start with the Newtown Bar, which as confirmed in the last issue has now closed. The days leading up to the 1st Jul closure were a mixture of celebration as faces old and new both behind and in front of the bar returned to bid an emotional farewell. As the final last orders were called there were a few tears at the passing of a Scene staple. Now the venue is being handed over to the Hanging Bat for a brand new look and feel we can only wonder when we will see the likes of the New Town Bar again. However, elsewhere on the scene, things are going from strength to strength. The Street has various theme evenings and awaits the return of Saturday Night Beaver (the 19th Jul edition being rescheduled shortly). Coupled with some of the best food and drinks offers, this makes the Street a good stopping place during the festival or for late night drinks in the Street Club (access from Broughton Street). The Street is also playing host to the Fringe with Cabaret Roulette. This brings the best of the West End cabaret circuit to Edinburgh from 2nd-12th of Aug starting at 6.30pm. Also at the Street is Sorry I’m A Lady which blends together a range of music and cabaret again running from the 2nd-12th at 7.45pm. Joining the bill is Magic and Tea with an Evil Genius which showcases up-close magic and storytelling. That’s on most days at 2.45pm. Check out Edfringe.com for all the details. Finally at the Street is The Mother of the Priest, a dark solo play based on the book The Mother by Nobel Prize Winner Grazia Deledda. This powerhouse of duty, family, passion and spirituality will run every day of the Fringe at 5.15pm. ScotsGay scotsgay.co.uk ACOMMUNITYMAGAZINEEDITED,PRINTED&PUBLISHEDINSCOTLANDSINCE1994 Moving to Chalky’s, as well as the regular drinks promos and the best DJs and the greatest atmosphere on the scene. Chalky’s is also playing host as an Edinburgh Fringe venue. With a production of Deep Throat Live headlining their offerings. This, play inspired by the 1972 cult classic movie that shocked the world, has hot action and cool music and is going to be a must see production. Running at Chalky’s 2nd-24th of Aug at 6pm. Entry is free with a donation on exit or book via the Edfringe box office for £5. Over the road at CC Blooms, things are going from strength to strength. With an excellent bistro menu during the day and early evening giving way to some amazing drinks offers and club nights. Sunday sees the return of the Church of High Kicks. Also don’t forget to pick up the CC’s Loyalty card which gives 15% off drinks and 25% off food. Next door in Habana, they are continuing to produce some of the best offers on the scene for drinks and when the sun is shining it can be tough going getting a seat outside but it always worth a look in to see what’s going down. Down at Planet, it continues to be the number 1 pre club bar with drink promos a plenty and with its sister venue, Chalky’s, playing host to fringe shows Planet will be an excellent stopping point for a pre performance drink. Finally don’t forget when you want to get away from all things Fringe, drop into Café Nom de Plume for the best in lunches, dinners and suppers and a relaxing drink overlooking the gardens. Or if a pint of real ale is more your choice, head to The Regent for a bit of rest and relaxation. So there we have it! As the busiest month in the city approaches there is much to indulge in and sample the many artistic opportunities on offer across the city.
