Our journey into the vibrant world of the ceramic arts has been a magical opportunity to learn, grow
and become enchanted. Brother Thomas (1929 - 2007) was our teacher, guide and gentle inspiration.
He encouraged us to be open to the “spirit” of the work as well as alert to its physical presence.
First he encouraged us to present the art of Tatsuzo Shimaoka (1918 - 2007) who was designated a Living
National Treasure of Japan in 1996. In doing so, a door to a new world opened and we found ourselves
in the universe of Mingei pottery. “The Art of the People” was inspired by the desire to fashion works for
daily use. The beauty of the pots grew out of its function: Yo no bi - the Beauty of Use.

of the Brother Thomas. He had, nonetheless, recognized the importance and special beauty of Shimaoka’s
art. Thereafter Shimaoka introduced us the work of two of his disciples/apprentices: Noriyasu Tsuchiya
and Ken Matsuzaki. Meanwhile, we sought out the pottery of Shoji Hamada (1894 - 1978) who was

Mingei movement with Soetsu Yanagi and collaborated with Bernard Leach.
Yanagi and Hamada recognized the Korean potters as a source for the natural forms and simple techniques
that helped them articulate their agenda. With their interest in the Korean potters and our interest in the
Yakimono (works in clay) by the potters of Onda we visited Korea in 2004 with the Welsh potter Phil
Rogers who had lived there.
Phil introduced us to Sung Jae and his compatriot Kang Hyo Lee and we have been privileged to present

museums. His work is now in the following major collections:
3
Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England
Sèvres National Museum of Ceramics, Paris, France
The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois
Newark Museum of Art, Newark, New Jersey
Mingei International Museum, San Diego, California
The Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina
National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea
Asian Art Museum, Daejeon, Korea
Sung Jae’s work immediately appealed to us. There is a simplicity of form that is complimented by the

enables each work to stand alone and yet together the entire body of new work creates an ode to nature.

dimensional forms add a richness to them.
We are grateful for this opportunity to invite you to enter into Sung Jae Choi’s world of beauty.
