and the largest in North
Rhine-Westphalia. Over 3 million

History
Cologne is the oldest of the major
German cities. Its name goes
back to the Romans, who gave
their city the name of »Colonia«
in 50 A.D. Rome's imperial
governor resided here and the
city quickly developed into one
of the empire's most important
trade and manufacturing centres
north of the Alps.

Cologne Cathedral is open daily from 6 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. It is not
possible to view the Catedral during services. Only group guided
tours which are arranged by Domforum and Cologne
Tourismus Board are allowed in Cologne Cathedral.

The Cathedral is the heart of the City of Cologne. It forms the centre
and provides the measure for everything else. 144 metres long,
86 metres wide and with 157-metre-tall spires. It stands of a flattopped
hill that has been a place of worship since the beginning of
the city`s history.
Cathedral building started 1248, completion 1880. Germany‘s
largest Cathedral, five-aisled Gothic basilica with tripleaisled transept.
Sepulchral church of the three Magi. Episcopal, chapter and
pilgrimage church. Interior: Golden shrine of the three Magi (around
1200). Gero crucifix, first monumental crucifix in Northern Europe
(before 1000).
Altar painting of the city‘s patron saints by Stephan
Lochner (around 1450). Stained glass windows (mediaeval: 1350
sqm). Carved choir stalls and choir screen paintings (14th c.).
»Swallow‘s nest« organ in the central nave (since 1998; weight: 30
tons).

How to get to the Cologne Municipal Museum
Metro: Stop Appellhofplatz/Zeughaus
In the city museum, the visitor will find exhibition pieces on
Cologne's city history from the middle ages up to the present day.
On the ground floor, the political history of Cologne from the middle
ages to the present day is displayed, while on the upper floor,
the cultural and economic history of Cologne is presented, and the
various periods brought to life. In exhibition space of 2,000 square
metres, around 5,000 of the 200,000 exhibits are on display.

Cologne`s »fifth season«
The Three Mad Days are the end and climax of Cologne Carnival.
The time of merry-making in the streets is officially declared
open at Alter Markt on the Thursday before the beginning
of Lent.
The real highlight is the next day, »Rosenmontag« (Rose
Monday), the day of the big Carnival procession with the
three chief Carnival figures, Prince, Peasant and Maiden.

The chocolate museum displays exhibits covering all aspects of
chocolate, and presents the success of the cocoa bean around the
world in vivid detail.
The highlight is the chocolate spring, from which visitors can sample
the sweet product. The basis of the museum is made up of exhibits
from the Stollwerck company, consisting of the story, cultivation,
and processing of cocoa, as well as the history of the company,
advertising, and industrial production.

In the fragrance chamber, the world of the parfumeur is brought
to life. Visitors can sample at length the most diverse essences, if so
desired. Detailed explanations - about the extraction of essences or
the production technique of Enfleurage, for example - give a vivid
impression of a parfumeur‘s creations, creativity and indispensable
talent. The museum tour then follows a staircase down into the
original cellar vaults, which is where perfumes were produced 300
years ago. A cedar-wood barrel that dates back to the business‘s
beginnings has endured the wear of time. A replica of a distillation
apparatus, like the one used by Johann Maria Farina in the 18th
century, exemplifies the artistry of distillation. In excerpts, pictures
illustrate the development of perfume production throughout three
centuries.

Cologne has not only a special
beer to offer, there are also some
meals that bear extraodinary
names. For example the "Halver
Hahn", which means "one half of
a cock", is not really chicken. It is
simple bread with cheese. Here
you'll find some especialities:
»Himmel un Ääd«
means "heaven and earth"
but if you order this, you' ll get
mashed potatoes with apple
mash, blood sausage, onions
and sometimes bacon.
»Flönz«
is a kind of blood sausage.
But the "Flönz" is not smoked
like other blood sausages, it is
cooked.
»Rievkoche«
The people of Cologne love
their "Rievkoche" (Reibekuchen).
Although you can get it
everywhere in Germany, this
potato pancake smells nowhere
as good as in Cologne. Traditionally,
it is enjoyed sweet with
apple mash.
»Rheinischer Soorbrode«
Traditionally it is made of horse
meat, but today you'll find
generally the version with beef.
The meat must be drenched
in vine, vinegar and a special
mixture of spice for a couple of
days so that it gets its extraordinary
flavour. After having
been cooked for a long time it
is served with mashed apples or
"Knödeln".
»Röggelchen«
is a special kind of roll. Its dough
is made of rye, which gives the
"Röggelchen" its dark look. It is
eaten with cheese and mustard
as "Halver Hahn" (translated
"one half of a chicken").
