Activity: Pose for a Mummy<br />
Portrait<br />
Materials: thin cardboard, pencil or black<br />
chalk, tempera paints; mirrors and<br />
various clothing props such as costume<br />
jewelry, crowns, colored fabrics<br />
Procedure:<br />
1. Share with <strong>the</strong> class additional<br />
examples of Faiyûm portraits. Ask<br />
students to think about how <strong>the</strong>y would<br />
want to be depicted in a mummy portrait<br />
and to choose fabrics with which to<br />
drape <strong>the</strong>mselves and any accessories<br />
<strong>the</strong>y would want to be portrayed<br />
wearing.<br />
2. Have students pair up and take turns<br />
creating portraits of each o<strong>the</strong>r wearing<br />
<strong>the</strong> props. Encourage <strong>the</strong>m to try to<br />
render <strong>the</strong> portraits in <strong>the</strong> style of <strong>the</strong><br />
Faiyûm portraits by posing <strong>the</strong>ir subject<br />
facing forward and by paying close<br />
attention to <strong>the</strong> details of facial features.
