WONG PIK WAN<br />

Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

Educated <strong>in</strong> Hong Kong, Wong Pik<br />

Wan received a solid ground<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese culture and classics. These<br />

provide <strong>the</strong> sources for works<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> a manner drawn from<br />

traditional Ch<strong>in</strong>ese brush pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and calligraphy <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore<br />

under Mr Fan Chang Qian, a<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>land Ch<strong>in</strong>a artist and graduate<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Shanghai Academy of<br />

F<strong>in</strong>e <strong>Art</strong>s.<br />

GLENDA ROBERTS<br />

Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong>ed as a commercial artist,<br />

Glenda Roberts now pa<strong>in</strong>ts colourful<br />

landscapes and domestic<br />

<strong>in</strong>teriors <strong>in</strong> watercolours. Her<br />

works are <strong>in</strong>fluenced by both New<br />

Zealand artists such as Frances<br />

Hodgk<strong>in</strong>s, Maude Burge and Rita<br />

Angus, and by artworks seen on<br />

her extensive overseas travels.<br />

"CONVERGENCE"<br />

Ricki Manual<br />

Weav<strong>in</strong>g and Carv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

This exhibition represents <strong>the</strong> convergence<br />

of <strong>the</strong> arcane, elemental<br />

and planetary spheres to weaver,<br />

Vivienne Mountfort and wood carver,<br />

Ricki Manual. The works derive<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir symbolic content from<br />

traditional Maori art.<br />

HUDSON<br />

Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

Marie-Gabrielle Hudson is a<br />

Liverpool born artist who moved to<br />

New Zealand eleven years ago.<br />

She uses <strong>the</strong> naturally strong colours<br />

of acrylics to help emphasise<br />

<strong>the</strong> colour and variety of earth<br />

shapes and vegetation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> New<br />

Zealand landscape. Her fasc<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

with colours, patterns and<br />

textures is also evident <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

works.<br />

CATHERINE BROUGH<br />

Oil pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

The motifs <strong>in</strong> Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e Brough's<br />

recent pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs derive from <strong>the</strong><br />

gorges and river valleys of <strong>the</strong><br />

Canterbury high country. Brough<br />

syn<strong>the</strong>sises landscape forms with<br />

experimental pa<strong>in</strong>t application <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se works. Each gesture <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g has its parallel <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

landscape.<br />

DAVID JONES<br />

Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

Auckland artist David Jones has<br />

exhibited widely, <strong>in</strong> New Zealand<br />

and his works can be found <strong>in</strong><br />

collections both here and overseas.<br />

His travels abroad to visit art<br />

galleries have clearly <strong>in</strong>fluenced<br />

his work and he has emerged as a<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>ter with a dist<strong>in</strong>ctive l<strong>in</strong>ear<br />

style. David Jones was awarded<br />

<strong>the</strong> 1988 Lord Bledisloe medal.<br />
