AAFP Mission The mission of The American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics is to foster excellence in the fields of prosthodontics, implant and esthetic dentistry. The Academy over its 60- year history has proudly represented the discipline of fixed prosthodontics for the dental profession. The mission of the Academy is to accomplish four goals: Provide Leading-edge Educational Enrichment Promote Patient Care Excellence Recognize Teaching Excellence Support Prosthodontic Research Origin and Heritage The American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics will continue to be the leading national voice of fixed prosthodontics. Its membership is composed of educators, clinical practitioners, and researchers of this important discipline of dentistry. The purpose of this organization is to achieve, by mutual study and cooperation, activities reflecting a high and ethical standard of practice, teaching and research in the art and science of crown and bridge prosthodontics. The Academy had its origin in 1950 in Chicago, Illinois. The three men who deserve credit for the concept and preliminary planning for the Academy were: Dr. Stanley D. Tylman, Dr. Claude R. Baker, and Dr. George H. Moulton. These men of vision rallied other important leaders in the field. Together, they planned an organizational meeting that took place at the Stevens Hotel on February 5, 1951. Those present at that meeting were: Doctors Stanley D. Tylman, Arthur O. Klaffenbach, Robert P. Dressel, Alver Selberg, Charles E. Peterka, Earl A. Nelson, Claude R. Baker, and George H. Moulton. Dr. Baker was chosen as temporary chairman and Dr. Moulton as temporary secretary. The next meeting was at French Lick, Indiana, on March 19, 1951, where the tentative Constitution and Bylaws were presented for approval. Charter members were initiated into the Academy on 2, 1952, in Chicago, making this the first annual meeting. The Academy have continued to grow and expand national and international membership to the present total of over 600 active and life members in 20 different countries. Members of today have a proud heritage in the Academy. We continue to dedicate ourselves to the pursuit of knowledge, truth, and competency in research, in teaching, and in the clinical practice of crown and bridge prosthodontics. Annual Meeting As the leader for the discipline of fixed prosthodontics, the Academy offers the premier clinical and scientific meeting. The AAFP is a select organization that identifies its membership based upon a clinician’s interest and commitment to the highest standards of fixed prosthodontic therapy. Recognized national and world leaders in patient care are at the podium and in the audience. The meeting is held annually at the end of February and parallels the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting. The AAFP Annual Meeting includes a 2- day scientific session with classroom seating, a large exhibit hall, poster presentations, and organized time for business meetings, awards presentations, and fellowship. The Chicago Marriott Downtown on Michigan Avenue provides an incredible venue for learning and fellowship for the annual average of 650 registrants. Specialists and general dentists representing more than 20 countries attend this outstanding event. The unique annual meeting energy arises from more than exceptional presentations in an outstanding venue. Energy further rises from vigor of attending young clinicians. On average, half of the advanced prosthodontics residents in the United States attend. The meeting is an amazing opportunity for them to speak with leaders in the field and learn one- on- one from them about fixed prosthodontics as they develop their practice visions. Exhibits A 7 th floor ballroom immediately adjacent to the scientific session houses the exhibit hall. Participants have direct access and ample opportunity to visit the exhibitors to purchase and learn of product availability. Approximately 35 exhibitors are onsite each year, and the exhibit floor is open from Friday morning through Saturday noon. All attendees spend time in the exhibit hall. Proximity of the exhibits allow for convenient traffic flow between exhibits and the scientific session. Breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon breaks are held in the exhibit hall. Each social event in the exhibit hall is an opportunity for sponsorship. Events are named for the sponsor.
