Sport & Adventure Training Involvement in sport is an integral part of the whole St Bees experience. The school has a long and proud tradition of excellence in both team and individual games, with the maximum use possible being made of our extensive indoor and outdoor facilities. These facilities include a large sports hall with a climbing wall, a gymnasium with two squash courts and a multigym, an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, Eton fives courts and extensive playing fields. Through the generous support of the Old St Beghians, there has been a large investment in the Golf Facilities at the School. In addition to our nine-hole golf course we also have a state-of-the-art golf studio, run by our resident PGA golf professional, and a purpose built chipping and putting green. St Bees School is situated in a wonderful geographical location and is in a prime position to offer Adventure Training as part of the curriculum. Within a short drive, pupils have access to the quiet and unspoilt Lakeland valleys of Ennerdale, Eskdale and Wasdale which hosts England's deepest lake, smallest church and highest mountain, Scafell Pike. Pupils from the Third Form upwards are involved with the highly successful Combined Cadet Force. There are currently over 100 cadets who are split between the Army and RAF sections. Through the CCF, pupils develop their leadership skills and are able to complete the various levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Extra-Curricular Activities At St Bees we believe in the education of the whole person. The extra curricular activities are an essential part of the school and aim to develop pupils' talents and interests. The activities take place after school between 4.15 and 5.00pm. First Form through to Fourth Form are expected to take part in activities every day, and the Fifth Form a minimum of 3 activities a week. Whilst we offer a great variety of activities, a few students continue with activities such as County sports teams outside of school during this time, with full support from the school. The range of such activities on offer is enormous with everything from Chess to Community Service, Debating to Young Enterprise and Circus Skills to Baking. Many of the Sixth Form pupils help out with activities or even run their own. Scholarships and Bursaries Academic scholarships are awarded in recognition of an outstanding performance in the 11+/13+ Entrance Examination and Interview. They are awarded to pupils entering school at age 11 and 13 and, subject to good conduct and progress, academic scholarships are for the duration of the pupil's time in the school. In addition Scholarships are available in Music, Sport and Art for particularly talented individuals. The Old St Beghian Society offer assistance to former pupils wishing to send their children to the School. Members of Staff are entitled to a twothird remission on day fees. Means-tested bursaries are available for those who could not otherwise afford to send their children to St Bees. They are available for day, weekly, full and flexi boarding places. Presently some 30% of pupils attending St Bees School are in receipt of a bursary. Governance and Management The School is governed by a group of fourteen school governors who elect their own Chairman. The Governors meet three times a year, with smaller sub-committees meeting between the full board meetings. Members of staff serve on some of the sub-committees. The School has a Senior Management team comprising the Headmaster, the Bursar, the Deputy Head, Registrar, Senior Housemistress and Senior Teacher.
The Modern Foreign Languages Department The Modern Foreign Languages Department at St Bees School consists of two full-time teachers, one part-time teacher, and at least one Language Assistant. Currently, French is taught from the First Form through to A Level, and Spanish is introduced to pupils in the Third Form and continues through to A Level. The Department is housed in the relatively new ‘Whitelaw Building’ and has two well equipped classrooms with the facility of interactive materials being used via laptops and data projectors. There is also a language laboratory in the Department, which is a little dated, but plans are in place for an upgrade of this facility in due course. The successful candidate would be expected to teach Spanish through to A Level and the Department currently follow the AQA examination specifications at both GCSE and A Level. The Department utilises Mira and Animo as key course books. The ability to teach French would be desirable but not essential. Future plans to actively recruit pupils in Spain are being explored, and this could create a number of exciting possibilities for the successful candidate. A willingness to contribute to the organisation of foreign study visits would be desirable. The Whitelaw Building
