Under the deal, the city would be required
to find space in public buildings
for charter schools, which operate independently
of the school district but
receive public funds. If the city could
not, it would have to cover the cost of
renting private space, up to $40 million.
Charter schools could challenge
the city’s selection of space through an
arbitration process.
TREAD CAREFULLY
DEBLASIO
Now, I’m not all that fond of Bill de
Blasio as he has proven to be a faux
progressive. The Tax Wall Street Party
had a candidate, Randy Credico, who
ran on a platform of equality and civil
rights. Credico would have fought hard
to end the charter school takeover, and
de Blasio made many misstatements
about his “progressive” stances. At best,
he’s been on the edge of issues and his
appointment of the “stop and frisk”
commissioner William Bratton was a
hugely disappointing act of betrayal to
his many minority supporters.
Mayor de Blasio, though he should
have closed many more charters, at
least took a tiny step toward ridding
NYC of three of the money-sucking,
for-profit charters. But, the $3.6 million
ad campaign against him is working.
New Yorkers now, according to polls,
apparently disapprove of de Blasio’s
handling of education.
We’ll be watching New York City and
Mayor de Blasio very closely. Let’s push
him to keep his campaign promises and
beef up his actions with a steady, dedicated
fight against charters for the most
important reasons that public schools
should be defended: the children.
