Simply Google summer piano festivals 2010!! In Memoriam - Earl Wild The great American pianist and Liszt Champion, Earl Wild, died peacefully in his sleep on January 23, 2010. More information may be found on his official website at www.earlwild.com. You may find other interesting articles by doing a Google search for Earl Wild. A New Liszt Vocal Recording We have learned about a new, privately produced CD of Liszt art songs: “Genie Oblige! -- Franz Liszt: Origin, Oeuvre and Legacy in Song.” The recording was conceived, produced, and sung by the American soprano, Wendy Waller. The recording is Ms. Waller’s recital debut CD and presents an overview of art song spanning the nineteenth century, centered on the music of Franz Liszt. She offers 11 of his songs (many of which are not available, as far as her publicist can tell, on any other CD), as well as selections by Liszt’s teacher Paer; early influences on Liszt, such as Bellini and Wagner, and those whom he encouraged or taught, such as Grieg, Draeseke, and von Bronsart. The 22 songs are accompanied on seven period pianos (Broadwood, Fritz, Erard, Bluethner, Bechstein, Streicher, and Stoecker) by Margaret Singer and recorded without any sound manipulation in the ballroom of the Residenzschlossmuseum, Weimar, in which Liszt frequently performed, and where the Beetz Collection of Historic Pianos is housed. Even before its September release, the CD was awarded a Diplome d’Honneur by the Hungarian Liszt Society’s thirty-fourth annual Grand Prix du Disque competition (2009). We believe Miss Waller is the first African-American woman to be so honored. She was also asked to sing the entire gala awardsceremony concert at the Liszt Academy in Budapest in October. Her honor was announced on page six of the October issue of OPERA NEWS magazine. In Advance: News About the 2011 Festival Alan Walker Book Prize Announced the American liszt Society proudly announces the Alan Walker book prize in honor of the 200th birthday of the Society’s namesake. the prize of $2000 will be presented by Alan Walker on february 19 at the 2011 American liszt Society bicentennial festival to be held at the university of Georgia in Athens february 17-19, 2011. Twenty-Nine Scores Submitted to the ALS Bicentennial Composition Competition the deadline for entries for the AlS bicentennial composition competition was february 1, 2010. twenty-nine works for solo piano (8-15 minutes in length) were submitted by composers ages 25-40. Submitting composers were from Australia, thailand, Israel, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, france, and the united States. Steinway & Sons will present a $4000 prize to the composer of the winning work immediately after its premiere at the 2011 AlS festival. New Work to be Premiered at ALS 2011 the great American baritone thomas hampson, star of the metropolitan opera and other major venues throughout theworld, will sing the world premiere of pulitzer-prize winner William bolcom’s AlS-commissioned work for the liszt bicentennial. titled lAurA SonnetS, it is a cycle of five petrarch sonnets having to do with his (possibly mythical) muse laura. the cycle will be part of mr. hampson’s recital on february 18, 2011 at the AlS bicentennial festival. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ NEXT NEWSLETTER DEADLINE The next issue of the American Liszt Society Newsletter will go to press approximately JULY 15, 2010. Chapter News Baltimore-Washington Chapter the directors of the 2009 liszt-Garrison festival and International piano competition extend heartfelt thanks to all present and past supporters, and encourage all to stay in touch. recordings and/or DVDs from the 2009 event are available for sale as previously announced. the chapter is most grateful to Dr. Alan Walker, who, in support of the chapter’s fund raising efforts to continue the liszt- Garrison festival and competition through 2011, has given his permission to produce and distribute the DVD, In the Footsteps of Liszt: The Progress of a Biography. Dyana neal, newscaster from WbJc, a classical radio station in baltimore, lent her expertise to this wonderful and historical interview. the event was held thursday, october 15, 2009, in marikle chapel at the college of notre Dame of maryland. the enthusiastic audience included bWAlS board members, volunteers, contestants, and guest artists. copies of the DVD may be ordered directly from nancy roldán, (n.roldan@lisztgarrisoncompetition. org) or from Susana cavallero (susanacavallero@aol.com). proceeds from DVD sales will benefit the 2011 liszt- Garrison festival and International piano competition project. A marathon concert to be sure, the repertoire included chopin’s 12 etudes of op. 10, performed by laura Garritson parker, and 12 etudes of op. 25, performed by rita nuller, and the complete transcendental etudes by franz liszt, performed by corbin beisner. All the performers are members of the hartford chapter. San Francisco Bay Chapter on January 17th, the San francisco bay Area chapter of the American liszt Society hosted hungarian pianist peter toth for a concert at the Green room at herbst theater in San francisco. ovations from the standing room only crowd greeted toth’s program of Schubert, liszt, and brahms, and the event raised over $1000 for Sf-AlS. the chapter’s next event will be the annual young pianists play liszt concert, which will be held at the San francisco conservatory on Saturday, April 24 at 2:30 p.m. New York/New Jersey Chapter the ny/nJ chapter will present pianist robert mitchell, the winner of the 2005 baltimore’s 1st liszt-Garrison International piano competition, on thursday, may 13, at 7:00 p.m., at the yamaha piano Salon, 689 fifth Ave. (at the ne corner of 54th St. between 5th Ave. and madison Ave.), 3rd floor.
