How long has polio been infecng people?<br />

Polio has been infecng people for thousands of years. A stone carving from<br />

Egypt dated to about 1500 B.C.E. shows a boy with shrunken legs caused by the<br />

virus. Tiny Tim in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol was probably a vicm of polio.<br />

Polio mainly infects children.<br />

Which U.S. President had polio? When did he serve as President? How old was<br />

he when he contracted polio?<br />

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, FDR, was 39 years old when he contracted polio on<br />

August 10, 1921. He was the 32 nd President. “Once you’ve spent two years trying to<br />

wiggle one toe, everything is in proporon,” Franklin Delano Roosevelt said in 1945.<br />

FDR had paralyc polio, which caused him to be paralyzed from the waist down.<br />

He was the only disabled president. He served as President from 1933 to 1945. He<br />

was the only U.S. President to serve three terms. He died less than three months<br />

aer he was elected to his fourth term. The United States Constuon has since been<br />

changed, so that no one can be elected for more than two terms as President.<br />

Who discovered the polio vaccine?<br />

Polio used to be widespread unl Dr. Jonas Salk, a true American hero,<br />

discovered the polio vaccine. The polio vaccine was made available to the public in<br />

1955. He did not patent his polio vaccine discovery, because it would have drascally<br />

increased the medicine’s price. He freely distributed the polio vaccine so every child<br />

could be saved from contracng this potenally crippling disease. In addion to<br />

polio, Dr. Salk dedicated his life to researching the causes, prevenons, and cures of<br />

influenza, cancer, and AIDS.<br />
