5 Economic and political economy determinants of governance<br />

choices: specication and results<br />

To empirically assess the determinants of alternative f<strong>or</strong>ms of service provision, we<br />

rst estimated an <strong>or</strong>dered probit model. As we mention in section 4, the dependent<br />

variable (Organization i ) takes the values 1 to 3 acc<strong>or</strong>ding to the mode of provision<br />

chosen by the local auth<strong>or</strong>ity i in 2006. The linear probabiblity model we estimate is<br />

the following :<br />

where X i is a set of variables capturing the economic and non-monetary determinants<br />
