The resolution to raise a fund for the
purchase of the ilersina property, belonging
to the estate of the late Dr. David
iletheny, referred to the Board, Avas considered
at its first raeeting after Synod.
It AA'as decided that in the judgraent of
the Board it Avnuld be unwise for the
Church to invest so rauch money in real
estate in Turkey at the present tirae.
The situation in reference to raission
schools is not yet exactly defined. The U.
S. Government proposes, as we understand
the official position, to insist that
the Sultan virtually granted the privileges
deraanded by the "Concessions" Avhen his
seeretary last August coraraunicated to
the Araerican ilinister the consent of the
Sultan, although this Avas not done by a
formal state document. Instructinns
from AA''ashington apparently authorize
the Legation at Cnnstantihnple to proceed,
and some steps are being taken tn
raalce a test case upnn this basis. In any
event, all that the Sublime Porte has so
far conceded is that schnnls already established
shall be regarded as free frora
taxatien, and entitled to prntectinn. This
should be helpful to the work at the leading
centers, but it will not authorize the
reopening of schnols that were unjustly
closed years ago by Turkish officials. AVe
can only say that, Avliile the conditions
are far from satisfactory', the nutlook for
iraproveraent is brighter than it Avas
tAvelve montbs ago.
Cyprus.—The center of Cyprus ilission
is Larnaca, Avliere Eev. Walter ilc­
Carroll and faraily have their home, and
Avhere the gnspel is preached every Sabbath.
His brnther. Dr. Calvin ilcCarroll,
Avhn was sent out in Octnber, 1904, will
make his medical headcj[uarters at Nicosia,
tli£ capital, and Avill visit other toAvns on
eertain daj's for the purpose of holding
clinics. On the island there are tAvcntyeight
coraraunicants, eleven in Larnaca,
seven in Nicosia, six in Faraagusta, two in
Kyrenia and tivo in Paphos, and we locate
thera that any one having the Map of
our ilission Fields can ascertain where
our Covenanter brethren in Cyprus live.
Nineteen of these were added last year, a
net increase of tAvelve. The Lord's Supper
Avas adrainistered four tiraes—twice
in Faraagusta, once in Larnaca, and once
in N-icosia. There Avere nine native workers,
including Iavo ordained rainisters, one
licentiate, two colporteurs, and four
teachers, and there were- thirty-eight
]iupils of three nationalities under religious
instruction.
In corapliance with the persistent request
.of ilr. ilcCarroU, the Board has
sanctioned the opening of a boarding
school in Larnaca for the training of
iiatiA-e teachers. The 23lan that has been
endorsed is as follows: The $1,200
donated by Eev. D. J. Shaw, of New
Alexandria, Pa., to erect a building in
meraory of his Avife avUI be expended in
the erection of a house on the raission
pro]ierty that Avill include six or seven recitation
moras, one to be a librar}', and a
large coraraon study room, Avhere the principal
will meet the classes. Across the
'street can be procured at an annual rental
of $100, tAVO detached buildings, one of
Avliich will make an excellent dormitory
for twenty-five bnys, and the nther, a
bungaloAV, Avill serve fnr dining room,
kitchen and home fnr the matrnn and
servants. The missionaries themselves
AviU, AA'ith the assistance of Dr. H. H.
George, provide the necessary furniture.
There Avill be five teachers, only one in
addition to those noAV employed, and without
an increase of salaries. The boarding
department, which is to be self-supporting,
Avill be in charge of ilrs. Aegyptiades,
her husband, who is one of the teachers,
sleeping in the dormitory and taking
