saw a contract signed for the Kraljevica
yard to construct two additional units of
the “Marjan” class which debuted in 2007
bringing the average age of the Jadrolinija
fleet down to 19 years. Early summer 2008
brought a further raft of developments for
Jadrolinija; firstly two further sisters of the
“Marjan” class were ordered from Split,
bringing the total in the series to five. The
vessels are due to enter service in the
second half of 2009. Almost in parallel, the
acquisition of three nearly new Greek
ferries was also announced, all of which
were to be introduced in time for the key
summer season further accelerating the
fleet renewal.
Infrastructure at the majority of the ports
is basic, but at Jadrolinja’s key harbours
modernisation initiatives included the refurbishment
of ticket offices and the in -
stallation of new electronic departure
boards guiding passengers and motorists
to the appropriate quay.
Significant additional capacity for
an excellent service
Despite the influx of new tonnage, Jadro -
linija have made extremely few disposals.
Almost all routes benefit from at least one
reserve vessel for peak or relief use, which

Die kroatische Reederei Jadrolinja hat ihre
aus fast 50 Schiffen bestehende Flotte in
den vergangenen Jahren erneuert und über
100 Millionen US-Dollar in Ankäufe und
Neubauten investiert. Die 1947 gegründete
Fährgesellschaft betreibt gegenwärtig
insgesamt 34 Routen in ihrem Netzwerk,

in a series of shipyards along the coast,
notably at the port of Cres on the island of
the same name, where no less than six
redundant ferries could be found in 2008.
It was not until March 2009 that initial
disposals have been announced, with four
ferries reportedly sold for breaking.
Despite this, at least five units remain in
reserve, not counting those assigned to
routes for active backup. Jadrolinija's fleet
in 2009 is almost unrecognisable from their
fleet at turn-of-the-century; appropriate
investments and astute purchases have seen
the company and services transformed,
with significant additional capacity created
to relieve pressure and provide an excellent
service for all users.
