Senior Chelsee Elliott participates in
the National Cheerleading Association
By shayna powless
spowless.eyeofthetiger@gmail.com
Chelsee Elliott is not only a part of the
cheerleading squad at RHS, but is also
in her first year of being a part of the National
Cheerleading Association (NCA).
As a NCA member, Elliott is a part of a
highly competitive cheerleading team and
she has the opportunity to mentor people
new to cheerleading, showing them stunts
and technique.
“My job is to teach people on the team
the basics of cheering and how to do it
properly,” said Elliott.
Elliot also helps with the scoring and
judging during competitions, and escorts
different teams to where they compete.
In addition, Elliot helps out at the cheer
camps hosted by the NCA.
“During the camps we would work
traditional cheers, drills and stunts for
cheer competitions and performances,”
said Elliott.
The NCA is one of the top cheerleading
teams in the United States and has
been in existence since 1948. People on
the team travel all over the country for
competitions held about once a month.
The NCA competes against over 100
different teams, such as the Universal
Cheerleading Association and JAMZ, in
each competition.
The NCA was also was the first organization
to create cheer camps and started
the first uniform manufacturing company.
There are many different sections of
the NCA in the U.S. since it is such a
large association. For example, the state
of California is known as the Western
section.
“Since it would be impossible for all
the people in California to meet up for
This is Chelsee Elliott’s first year participating in the NCA. In addition to
her membership in the NCA, Elliot is also on the RHS cheer team.
regular practices, the practices are held in
local areas,” said Elliott.
The only time all the members of the
section team get together and perform are
during competitions.
“I haven’t been to any competitions yet
since I just joined the team, but the next
one I will be going to is in November,”
said Elliot.
The sectional team that Elliott is a part
of consists of both guys and girls with
girls age 18 and over, a part of the team
squad.
“There are a lot of guys on the team
but there are mostly girls,” said Elliott.
Elliott plans to continue being a part of
the NCA during and after college.
“Chelsee is an awesome girl, a great
leader, and a great attribute to our program,”
said Laurie Rosen, a coach of the
NCA.
Rosen is also the mother of Danielle,
one of the girls coached by Elliott on the
NCA team.
“I think she is really nice, fun, and
great at teaching how to cheer,” said Danielle
Rosen.
Junior Jacob Priley
chosen as 2011 boys
state representative
By shayna powless
Promoting boys to do their best in society
and become fully aware and educated
of today’s government, Boys State had its
annual state qualifiers last Monday.
Roseville High School teachers nominated
five students based on their outstanding
performance in school, extracurricular
activities and community service.
Each candidate also had to be a junior
with a minimum grade point average of
3.0.
This year, Joshua Frost, Yusef Khan,
Keaton Landenberger, Matsuhisa Mori
and Jacob
Priley were
selected as the
2011 candidates.
“The
boys were
interviewed
for about 30
minutes by the
Gentlemen of
the American
Legion, and
picked one
of the five boys to represent RHS at the
Boys’ State competition this summer,”
said Cindy Travasso, head of the College
and Career Center at RHS.
Priley was selected as the 2011 RHS
Boys State delegate.
“I feel very lucky and privileged to be
picked for such an honorable position,”
said Priley.
Each interview varied but kept the
common theme of American history and
ideals. Candidates were asked about their
thoughts on patriotism and what it means
to be a respectable American citizen.
Frost was selected as the runner up to
take Priley’s place in case he isn’t able to
attend the week long Boys State camp this
summer.
“I am really happy that I made it, and
I think it is a great program for those who
are into government,”
said
Frost.
“I feel very lucky and privileged
to be picked for such
an honorable position.”
