Introduction
Who are we?
The German Society is a student union society
at the London School of Economics and Political
Science. With currently over 500 members, the
Society has become the largest German student
society in the UK. With membership open to
everyone, our reach now goes far beyond LSE.
What do we do?
Our aim is to promote a wider interest in German
politics, economy and culture at LSE and amongst
our fellow students. We organise a wide variety
of events, ranging from meetings with members
of the German Bundestag at the German Embassy
and cultural events such as panel discussions and
the screening of German movies to recruitment
events with firms targeting our members. The
Society’s flagship event is the annual German
Symposium which has become the largest and
most successful annual student event at LSE. A
week of events features guest speakers from
politics, business, media and culture.
The London School of Economics’ international
student and staff body, with over 8,000 students
from 140 countries, makes the LSE a world class
centre for its concentration of teaching and
research across the full range of the social, political
and economic sciences. It is part of LSE’s culture to
incorporate speakers from a variety of backgrounds
into academic debate, something to which the
German Symposium has contributed successfully
in the past.
Why this brochure?
Why is it structured like this?
This book provides an overview of the last ten
years of successful German Symposia and in it we
share our excitement about the highly interesting
and rewarding experience which the events have
brought to, so far, more than 1,000 attending
students at each Symposium, over 100 speakers and
over 100 committee members. Hoping to capture
the intellectually thrilling and dynamic atmosphere
of the events, we want to pay tribute to the
many outstanding speakers, thank our dedicated
supporters, and raise interest for future Symposia.
