Guildwood News & Views Summer 2014 – 13 Community Police Liaison Committee Update The following is a collection of items raised at three CPLC meetings in April, May and June. n Increase in traffic collisions and traffic act enforcement is set by the patterns. Markham Road is again being patrolled by traffic units in response to the number of accidents and aggressive driving reported. n We are urged to be vigilant for strangers and vehicles which do not seem to belong and if in doubt call police and report, use 43 Division number 416 808 4300 unless you observe a crime in progress in which case call 911. Call every time you observe suspicious persons. n Jewelry chain grabs continue in some areas (Markham and Eglinton being one of them) so be aware of your surroundings; and if you have reason to be concerned, go into a store for refuge. If you live in a building with elevators, do not enter one if there are strangers in there but wait for the next one. Call 43 Division if concerned. n Trends: Phone calls from a male stating to be representing Bell Fibe service in your area and needing a few details to enable you to get a quote. Details asked for include personal information and once given a promise to call back is made but never happens; this is an identity theft issue. DO NOT GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION TO CALLERS. n Hot water heater sales people continue to be an issue especially for seniors who are pressured to sign up for new equipment, which they do get, and then are stuck with large bills for as long as 15 years. n A new scam is people coming to homes and saying they are from the Province and are to check that the air conditioner is operating properly. They are suspected of practices similar to the water heater guys and you should see them off. n Always be vigilant for new scams. If something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. n The Microsoft scam is rearing its head again; do not fall for it. The scam is the caller claims to be from Microsoft maintenance and have detected a problem with your computer and to fix it need access to it. If you do this they will clean out all personal info and passwords on your computer and identity theft is in your future along with the chance of having your bank account accessed. Just hang up. n After a year-long investigation police arrested 10 men who were running a prostitution ring. They had been targeting young girls, some as young as 14, who were vulnerable due to having left home or shelters and taking them for prostitution. While the particular investigation has ended, police remain vigilant and welcome public help in reporting any incidents where girls appear to be taken advantage of. GVCA St. Ursula Catholic School “We’ve Got the Spirit” Another amazing school year has come to an end at St. Ursula. There were many memories created this year involving sports, leadership and community activities. At the heart of all events, students demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and camaraderie as they remembered to follow the Golden Rule depicted on our school quilt. Our dear secretary, Mrs. Crocco, will be retiring from St. Ursula this June and we wish her all the best. Staff, students and parents will miss her very much and we hope she will be back to visit us often. Our grade eight students had the unique opportunity of organizing and leading a three-day Camp Olympia Leadership experience for 350 intermediate students from schools across the TCDSB. Fantastic school spirit! Our Student Council enjoyed many meaningful visits to Chartwell Livingston Lodge, continually strengthening the bonds they have developed with the residents. The school community participated in Santa’s Goodies and Gifts, Shrove Tuesday and Carnival. Our parents, students and staff enjoyed hosting a garage sale, and participating in the Guildwood Day Parade. We also joined with Guildwood Public School to attend a presentation Eagle Thunder: Sound of Hope. Enjoying our neighbours and being connected in Guildwood Village is important and rewarding for our school community. Ingrid McEachen Principal
