ensuring <strong>the</strong>ir admissions criteria enable <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong><br />
have a largely academic focus, ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />
enrolling pupils <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> maximum of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
admissions number. This would allow secondary<br />
schools <strong>to</strong> have a wider ability intake of pupils in<br />
any particular year.”<br />
Unionist political <strong>and</strong> community leaders have<br />
a vital role <strong>to</strong> play in addressing this situation.<br />
While quick <strong>to</strong> laud <strong>the</strong> notable <strong>and</strong> undeniable<br />
achievements of <strong>the</strong> grammar system, <strong>the</strong>re has<br />
been insufficient leadership <strong>and</strong> honesty among<br />
Unionist politicians in acknowledging <strong>and</strong><br />
addressing underachievement, which has a<br />
profound <strong>and</strong> lasting impact on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Protestant</strong><br />
working class community in particular.<br />
