Recently Deceased Alumni
The following alumni have passed away
in recent months. The UMFK campus
community extends our heartfelt sympathy
to family and friends.
Annette J. (Pelletier) Gagnon
1935
Janet (Roy) Brown
1940
Martin R. Blaney II (‘08) graduated
on December 10, 2011, from Virginia
Commonwealth University, after completing
the Master of Science Nurse Anesthesia
(MSNA) program. Martin passed the
National Certifying Examination (NCE).
Now Martin can seek licensure in the state
of Maine as an advanced practice nurse. As
a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist,
Martin will provide anesthesia care to
patients at Down East Community Hospital
in Machias, Maine. He is very excited to
begin work, even as he completes the final
semester, of his doctoral program at VCU.
Martin’s doctoral work is in human factors
in anesthesia patient safety, and upon
graduating in May, he will hold a Doctor of
Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) degree.
“I would like to thank the nursing faculty at
UMFK for preparing me for graduate education.
I hope someday to pay it forward,
by helping to prepare the next generation of
nurses and nurse anesthetists,” states Martin.
Pam Harpine (’09) now is enrolled in the
Master of Science in Nursing program
at University of Maine in Orono. Pam
would be glad to pass on her books to other

Maria L. Reynolds (’09) graduated with a
bachelor’s degree in behavioral science with
a criminal justice minor. She also earned an
associate’s degree in human services. Maria
still resides in the St. John Valley.
Steven Guimond (’11) began working at
Defense Finance and Accounting Service
(DFAS) in Limestone, first on an internship
beginning October 2010 and later
on, full-time employment at DFAS. In
January, he was accepted in the Leadership
in Motion (LIM) program. The program
is a two-and-half year program that prepares
a person for leadership roles, such as
project leads or supervisors. While in the

program you are expected to give three or
more talks. The talks are a small portion of
the program. Participants also are asked to
set up meetings, developmental assignments,
work with management, and attend high
level meetings, that give them exposure to
what to expect, when they move higher into
their careers. DFAS and the LIM program
are great learning experiences for Steven
and he enjoys every minute of it. Most of
his work assignments consist of analyzing
transactions between databases that monitor
the flow of funds between treasury and the
military. Steven’s oldest child has decided to
attend Eastern Maine Community College
as a culinary art student. His two younger
children are striving to do their best in high
school and middle school, so that they may
attend college, like their father. Steve is
working towards a Certified Government
Financial Manager certification, and has
plans to earn a master’s degree in business
administration.
